I feel summer just started and normally by this time of year I am ready for fall. Honestly, not this time. Momma ain’t ready.lol but the smell of this cider and the taste, was soo darn good, it may have given me a slight feeling of looking forward to the rain ahead and the wood stove, while enjoying a warm cup of this pear cider.

You’re gonna want the recipe, I got you ⬇️
(I doubled the recipe and those are the measurements I’m sharing)

Pear Cider:
-20 pears, halved
-2 oranges sliced
-8 cinnamon sticks
-4tsp ground all spice
-2 Tbs whole cloves
-2 vanilla bean pods, sliced down the center
-1c brown sugar, loosely packed
-20c water

Bring to a boil and simmer 3 hours. Mash pears and simmer 10-15 more minutes. Strain liquid using a colander or cheesecloth. Fill pint jars 1/4” headspace and process in water bath or steam canner 10minutes.

99¢/lb pork shoulder? You better believe I stocked up!

I canned some for the pork for the pork and black bean chili recipe I shared recently. what was leftover I slow-cooked the pork, shredded it, and vacuum-sealed meal-sized portions for the freezer. Now I have ready-to-go protein for carnitas, pork sliders, burritos, and so much more.🙌🏼

A little prep now means easier meals later, and it’s another way to preserve food, stretch our grocery budget, and make the most of a good sale.

➡️ @forjars isn’t just for canning! They also have vacuum sealer bags that are perfect for stocking your freezer with ready-to-use ingredients and meals.

My canning pantry is a little weak in the ‘meal’ department and that’s a priority of mine I’m focusing to fix.

This week I’m filling the gap with a couple meals of this pork and black bean soup. . Because when winter storms knock out our power, sickness makes its way through the house, or life gets extra busy, or this talk about the power grid lately, I’m not trippin. I want meals ready to go without relying on the freezer or having to cook.

Preparedness isn’t about living in fear of what might happen. It’s about being intentional with what we can control and taking care of our families with what we have

“REAL HOMESTEADERS, REAL SKILLS.” A subject line I read for a recent email I received. This is a perfect example of what I talked about a year ago- I’ll do it again.

So what makes someone a REAL homesteader? More acres? More livestock? A YouTube channel? Speaking at conferences? And now, are some skills considered more “real” than others? C’mon🫠

You don’t need 40 acres, a podcast, a YouTube channel, or a paid monthly subscription to learn skills that others are willing to share for free to be a ‘real’ homesteader.

Don’t get me wrong, There’s nothing wrong with paying and learning from experienced people. But having more experience doesn’t make someone more of a homesteader, and it certainly doesn’t make everyone else less of one.

We’re all coming into this lifestyle from different backgrounds, with different resources, budgets, family needs, and seasons of life. We’re all doing what we can with what we have, and homesteading is going to look different for every family..

This is exactly why I stepped back from the homesteading community on social media about a year ago. Somewhere along the way, what used to be about learning, sharing, and becoming more self-sufficient turned into perfection, comparison, and competition.

We can share what we’ve learned without acting like we’re the authority on who belongs. We can acknowledge experience without turning it into a hierarchy. We can teach without making someone feel like they’re less than because they’re just starting out.

Nobody is better because they have more land, more livestock, more experience, more followers, a microphone at a conference, or a YouTube channel.

Take what you can learn from others, share what you know, and build a life that works for YOUR family.

We’re here to build a life, not prove we’re living it better than someone else or having a checklist of what makes someone a REAL homesteader. I fear people are starting to miss the point. 😵‍💫

Worry more about what you can control.

It’s not about living in fear or expecting the worst. It’s about being intentional with what we have, learning practical skills, and taking responsibility for the things within our control.👌

Every jar on the shelf is one more meal ready to feed my family. And of course, I’m using my @forjars canning lids! You can use my code RED10 to save on your canning supplies.

The sourdough farmhouse loaf we keep making on repeat! Simple, hands-off, and perfect for everyday bread. I always make an extra loaf to stash in the freezer, too!

➡️Save this post so you can make it later, and follow @red.ridge.roots for more homestead life and recipes!

*these measurements are for one loaf. But I always grab an extra bowl and make another!
Also, I prefer measuring in grams and weighing my ingredients, but you do you🥰

✨Sourdough Farmhouse Loaf Recipe ↓

• in a large bowl mix:
300g (1 3/4c) warm water
65g (1/3c) active starter
12g (1 Tbs) sugar
15g (1 Tbs) oil

• Then to the bowl add:
400g (3 1/3c) bread flour
100g (3/4c+1Tbs) APF
9g (1 1/2tsp) salt

1. Combine it’ll be a shaggy and rough, but mix with hand until there’s no more dry flour (I’ll use a little water or oil on my hands to help prevent sticking) and then form into a ball, it doesn’t have to be perfect.. Cover for 30min-1 hour

2. After resting Work the dough into a ball for about 20 seconds, the dough will feel stiff but much softer. I do stretch and folds motion for this part. Cover dough and rest for 8-10 hours (I’ve done 12 here and it’s fine)

3. Remove dough on lightly floured surface and gently dimple the dough with fingers to remove any large air bubbles. Roll/shape dough into a log, tuck in the ends and rest for 5-10minutes

4. Lightly coat loaf pan. oil. With floured hands, cup the dough and pull it toward you to tighten its shape. Place into your loaf pan, seam side down. Cover and rise 1-2 hours.

5. Preheat oven 375° bake on center rack for 40-45minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, this is when I butter the tops and then transfer to a wire rack.

A good pair of boots gets put to WORK around here and they never get put away🙌🏼

These are my second pair of @hisea_official boots, and I wear them every day! Between feeding goats, watering/feeding chickens, gardening, and navigating the uneven terrain around our property, I need boots that are comfortable, durable, waterproof and have good traction.

I especially appreciate the grip when I’m walking around our property, and when the chores are done, I can rinse them off and they’re ready for the next day.

Gear up for fall and hunting:
