“lady lazarus” - text by Sylvia Plath, set by Ned Rorem in Ariel (#5). performed with @maxreedd and @rafe.lei.pf

one of the most difficult sets I’ve ever learned - so beyond grateful that I was able to present all of Ariel for my master’s recital. I’ve always admired Sylvia Plath’s voice so deeply - she is brutally honest in a way that is frightening and shocking. I think Rorem’s setting of her words does her so much justice and it’s important that we keep her voice alive. Mental health and depression was so misunderstood in her time, and this set makes me reflect on how far we’ve come in terms of mental health acceptance and resources. There is still more advocacy to be done! but nevertheless, I am so grateful I am able to share this music and poetry. 🩷
