APA X-GYM Break All Limits IX (1st Nov 2026)

Not quite the day I was hoping for, but managed to walk away proud.

After having two squats knocked back on depth and my third bench for a slight bum lift, it was frustrating to lose attempts on technicalities, especially on weights I've hit consistently in training. But at the end of the day, what counts in training doesn't always count on the platform.

Managed to finish strong on deadlifts and comeback to secure 🥈

210/230x/230x
137.5/145/150x
245/275/285

Special thanks to @michael_repz for coaching and handling me, it's always a pleasure growing with you. by @repz_au

COMMONWEALTHS RECAP 🇦🇺

Angelica Fajardo — 5th in the U63s and Commonwealth deadlift GOLD!

Squat: 160kg
Bench: 80kg
Deadlift: 207.5kg 🥇
Total: 447.5kg (+2.5kg)

Gels put herself in the best possible position: a smooth prep, well-managed weight cut and organised travel. Bring her first international comp and a decent gap between her nominated total and the top four, our focus was on fighting for an individual deadlift medal.

We matched her best squat despite switching from stiff to soft sleeves. Bench was moving well, so we took a shot at 85kg. It wasn’t there on the day—in hindsight, 82.5kg would’ve been the better call.

Then came deadlifts!

England had a nominated deadlift of 215kg against Gels’ best of 207.5kg. After their 205kg second attempt, we anticipated they’d use their third attempt to pull into first from fourth place.

New Zealand’s final deadlift was the deciding factor. If they missed, England would only need 215kg to move into first, and we had a 217.5kg card ready for Gels. When NZ made their lift, England needed 220kg.

Watching the second attempts closely, we backed our assessment that 220kg was a big ask. We chose 207.5kg to give Gels the strongest chance of securing deadlift gold—and it paid off.

Our original plan was 212.5kg for the Australian record. Could we have taken it? Possibly. But missing would have cost us the gold. In that moment, we prioritised the medal over the kilos.

A big takeaway from international competition: athletes are fighting for different things. Understanding their priorities helps you recognise opportunities for your own athlete. We stayed focused on our goal while the battle unfolded around us.

Huge thanks to assistant coaches @barbell_kay and @jacobsofianos for running the numbers and mapping out the scenarios, and @lulnex and @slackpullsquid for their help from the crowd. Those final deadlift rounds move quickly, and having a team makes a massive difference.

Proud of you Gels! We made it all the way from the commercial gym to the commonwealth stage. What a journey 💛 by @repz_au

PowerPals III

Had the opportunity to compete alongside two of my long-term athletes, @manheiheitse and @bradfordlifts .

🥇 @bradfordlifts & @shaunhemmolifts — Best Overall Team
🥈 @manheiheitse & I — 2nd Overall Team

Manhei — 597.5kg @ 80.4kg | 84.06 GL
Manhei came into the meet chasing a 652.5kg qualifying total after finishing the prep with a strong 635kg total. Unfortunately, a few injury setbacks in the final week meant the day didn’t quite come together. Even on a tough 5/9 day, he still managed a performance within 10kg of his all-time best. Definitely not the result we came for, but I’m proud of the resilience he showed to keep fighting through the day. We’ll take the lessons from this one, get healthy and have another crack at that QT.

Daniel — 630kg @ 73.8kg | 92.62 GL
Daniel came into this one with a different goal — have fun, put together a good performance and enjoy the comp before shifting more of his focus towards his thesis/studies.
He put together a great subtotal, including a 240kg squat for a 5kg PB (proved me wrong) and a 150kg bench. Unfortunately, grip cost him his second and third deadlifts, leaving him with a 240kg deadlift. Considering he’s normally good for up to 270kg with straps, we’ve got a pretty obvious weakness to work on going forward.

Being on the platform myself meant I couldn’t give the boys my usual attention on meet day, so a massive thank you to @barbell_kay and @tom__davies__ for handling them and keeping everything running while I was busy dying through my own comp. I’m also glad I’ve got athletes competent enough to handle themselves when their coach is preoccupied.

Proud of both boys. Not perfect days, but plenty to take away from them.
