My Naija , How far? by @revken1
It's alarming how many so called broadcasters today can't string a coherent narrative without guest appearances or social media prompts. This trend is breeding a generation of broadcasters who lack depth, creativity, and critical thinking. If you can't research, develop content, or fact-check, you're not a broadcaster – you're just a facilitator. The art of storytelling, crafting compelling narratives, and delivering impactful messages is getting lost in the noise of instant gratification and clickbait journalism. I feel broadcasting schools and training programs should prioritize teaching these essential skills: research, content creation, and storytelling. Until then, we'll keep churning out broadcasters who are more like moderators than true content creators. by @revken1
MY BIGGEST FEAR: AS I FLIPPED THROUGH A FEW RADIO STATIONS AFTER MY BREAKFAST SHOW) In today's fast-paced media landscape, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle of breaking news and forget the essence of great storytelling. Yet, some of the most impactful broadcasters are those who can weave a narrative that captivates audiences and leaves a lasting impression. The decline of storytelling in radio, particularly in newspaper reviews breakfast shows, is stark. Many presenters with good command of English : which isn't enough anyways) stick to reading headlines without adding depth or context, stripping the news of its power to engage and inform. Broadcast journalism is more than just reading words off a page; be it political, entertainment or lifestyle, it's about crafting a narrative that resonates with listeners. The old-school approach of storytelling without phone-in shows is a great example of how to do it right. Presenters would take time to craft a story, add context, and make the story come alive. This issue seems to be a lack of proper training or practice. Broadcasters need to invest in developing their storytelling skills, moving beyond mere headlines reading to create a compelling narrative that draws listeners in. Who are we handing this baton over to , as we'll soon take the back seat? Are they properly groomed? My biggest fear. by @revken1
25 years and still counting in active radio Broadcast in Nigeria, when should I retire? by @revken1
At this milestone, my heart is overflowing with emotions. 25 years on radio have been a sacred trust, a privilege to touch lives, and a journey that has taken me to places I never thought I'd go. Every moment, every program hosted, every interview anchored ,every news cast, every story reported, every jingle, documentary voiced and produced as well as the few stations I headed has been a thread in the tapestry of my life. I've woven stories, shared laughter, and cried with my audience. I've seen the best and worst of humanity, and I've been changed by it all. But it's not just about me. It's about the people I've met, the lives I've touched, and the stories I've told. It's about the next generation of broadcast journalists who are making their mark across Africa, and the hope they bring to a continent that's full of promise. As I look back, I am reminded of the power of passion and purpose. I am reminded that when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. I am reminded that the greatest gift we have is the ability to inspire, to uplift, and to make a difference. To everyone who has been part of this journey – my colleagues, mentors, memtes, friends, and family – I say thank you. Your love, support, and encouragement have been the wind beneath my wings. I am , because you are. And to the next generation of broadcast journalists I am proud to have played a role in shaping and inspiring your careers to reach new heights, I say: the world needs you. It needs your energy, your passion, and your voice. Don't be afraid to take risks, to push boundaries, and to tell the stories that needs to be told. As I celebrate this milestone on November 2nd, I am filled with gratitude for the giants who paved the way for me. Here's to 25 years of broadcasting excellence! Cheers to many more years of telling stories, sharing ideas, and making a difference in the world of radio. May our voices continue to inspire, to uplift, and to change lives. The poignant encounter between Tunde Onakoya and Professor Wole Soyinka has left an indelible mark on my thoughts. When Tunde extended an invitation to engage in a game of chess with the Nobel laureate, Soyinka's gentle decline was both unexpected and intriguing. His suggestion that he'd rather attend an occasion where Tunde was playing someone else, and he'd watch, sparked a series of reflections. At first, I attributed his decision to the constraints of time, but upon further consideration, I realized that Soyinka, having transcended the hustle and bustle of life, is no longer bound by the pressures of deadlines, financial worries, or brand-building imperatives. If he desired, he could certainly allocate time for a single game. The time required to watch would be equivalent to playing, so what underpinned his decision? This led me to ponder possible motivations behind Soyinka's choice. Could it be: 1. A subtle acknowledgment of Tunde's mastery, with chess having become an honed skill in the younger man's hands, rendering the stakes uneven? 2. A symbolic passing of the torch, where Soyinka's decision to watch rather than compete signifies a deliberate gesture, implying, "This is your moment, your stage, and I'll support your rise"? 3. Or perhaps Soyinka, having devoted his youth to his craft, has evolved beyond the need for competition, prioritizing presence over performance, and recognizing that his role now is to celebrate and support, rather than overshadow? Regardless of the underlying reason, Soyinka's choice resonates deeply, highlighting the wisdom and power of "making space." This act of being present for the next generation without competing with them, choosing to uplift rather than eclipse, speaks volumes about discernment, letting go, and knowing when to assume different roles. Even in his later years, Soyinka's intentional investment of his presence serves as a masterclass, underscoring that it's not merely about capability but about appropriateness – Presence Over Performance. This nuanced understanding of when to watch and when to play offers a profound lesson in humility, wisdom, and the art of graceful transition. by @revken1
