📍 GDMBR SECTION 1 - Montana (Part 2) 🚵 Great Divide Mountain Bike Route '24 🧭 Llama Ranch → Helena → Lava Mountain Montana on the Move: From Llamas to Lava & Bear Encounters Leaving Llama Ranch came with a brutal but rideable 20km climb—11% grade and all. The descent into the ranch, though unmaintained, was pure joy on fat tires. Others grumbled; you flew. Llama Ranch itself was more commune than campsite—a hub of hikers, cyclists, and trail energy. You shared space with couples from Washington and Germany, a Dutch retiree, and even CDT hikers. New bikepackers rolled in, a rattlesnake met its end near camp, and somehow you found yourself eating it—cooked by an Aussie with no wasteful bone. From there, the road twisted toward Helena, crossing the Continental Divide twice. The heat was real, but the high-altitude breeze made it bearable. You fell into stride with locals from Helena—your kind of people, including a film photographer and a laid-back riding couple. Helena was more than a stop—it was a mini world. You reconnected with characters like Dan, the Frenchman on a folding bike who sold everything to see the world on two wheels, and swapped tips with Tom, a history-savvy rider from Jackson. Young travelers from Banff filled the campsite with global accents and trail stories. Downtown Helena offered another kind of trail—Reeders Alley, where Montana’s miner legacy lives on in timber and brick. A local, Anna, pointed you to The Bray, a sculptor’s sanctuary you’d never forget. Then came Lava Mountain, where the night turned primal. You camped wild with Kiwi and British-Aussie riders. That same night, a lone motorcycle traveler crash-camped nearby—only to be circled by bears till dawn. You learned about it over morning coffee, reminded again that the Divide writes its own drama. #gdmbr #bikepacking by @reynan
📍 GDMBR SECTION 1 - Montana (Part 1) 🚵 Great Divide Mountain Bike Route '24 🧭 Roosville, Mt. USA → Eureka → Whitefish → Bigfork → Ferndale → Seeley Lake → Lincoln, MT → Llama Ranch Through the Pines and Past the Divide: A Journey Across Montana The journey begins in quiet Roosville, where pine forests stretch from glacial valleys, leading to Eureka, a quilt-covered town with stories stitched into log homes and museum walls. Up through Flathead Forest, wild huckleberries line the path and rain cools the long climbs. At Red Meadow Pass, ancient pines tower above and otters play at dawn. You lose tent poles, gain a story, and ride on. In Whitefish, river trails, hot showers, and café stops offer a warm pause. Then the path flows into Bigfork, where mountain scenery mirrors a Windows screensaver, and the lakeside town pulses with Friday night music and magic. Campsites become communities—riders from Germany, Spokane, and the East Coast cross paths. You climb solo to Holland Lake, roll into rainy Seeley Lake, and reroute through smoky skies to Lincoln, where sculpture trails and a kind library restore your spirit. Finally, a steep ascent leads to Llama Ranch. The descent is wild, the welcome warm, and the journey—more than a ride—is a celebration of trail, place, and soul. #gdmbr #bikepacing by @reynan
📍 GDMBR Section: Canada - Part 2 🚵 Great Divide Mountain Bike Route '24 🧭 Waiparous Village → Ghost Lake → Kanannskis → Exshaw → Canmore → Banff → Round Prairie → Elkford → Sparwood → Fernie → Roosville Threads of the Divide – Part 2 Waiparous dawn: two still-born days, Tending the tendon that begged me stay; Ghost Lake mirrored an unburnt sky, While horse-flies carved their alibi. Kananaskis heat—an anvil glare, Blistered skin beneath prairie air. Alone in grizzly country’s sweep, Bell and bear-spray, yet no bear to meet. Exshaw wind brought roadside bread, Locals’ kindness filled my sled. Smoke chased close—Jasper’s grief— Flames in the rear like a thief. Night before Canmore, a ranger’s cry: “Fire climbs the ridge—ride or die!” I broke camp fast, wheels in flight, Pedaled the sparks into star-washed night. Canmore cradle: trails and cafés, Family's laughter, two soft days. Sunburn cooled, spirits mended, Three Sisters blushed—my rest defended. Near Banff, an Ilocano voice in the dusk— Countryman’s grin, shared rice and trust. Southward we rolled, a trio strong, Elkford mist, Sparwood song. Fernie pines and Roosville’s gloam, New-found friends, half-felt home. Valleys vast, marmots, elk, and moose— But never a bear set paw on the loose. Wildfire ash, horse-fly bite, Sun-scorched days and embered night— The Divide keeps threading flame and grace, Each kindness a knot in its endless lace. 📍 GDMBR Section: Canada - Part 1 🚵 Great Divide Mountain Bike Route '24 🧭 Jasper → Wildhose Lake → Hinton → Cadomin → Robb → Nordegg Threads of the Divide – Part I From Jasper’s gate, the wild began, Icefields struck like thunder’s hand. First day’s trail—a dream in dirt, Singletrack stitched through nature’s skirt. In Hinton's arms I found repair, Two nights safe in mountain air. Beaver lakes behind we rolled, Their kindness worth more than gold. Cadomin called—but doors were shut, So I turned back through gravel and rut. Robb stood quiet, worn but wide, An old bar’s welcome, a warm place to hide. An RV bed, a feast in a bin, Fuel to push the cold back in. Then Nordegg came, with charm so neat— A town where skis and pedals meet. A shop called Bee Hive, honey and thread, And a stranger’s roof above my head. No fixed route, just wheels and will— Proof that grace lives in the hills. So the Divide unwound, rough and true, Each mile a gift, each moment new. Happy Yuletide holidays to all who celebrate! 🕊️ If our paths crossed this year, know that you're one of the reasons it has been so joyful. From my family to yours, we’re sending you warm wishes and positive vibrations! 🌌😊 by @reynan
#GDMBR Canada Section ✅ done. The best single track I've ridden to date. The best gravel roller coaster of forestry trunk dirt roads. Some of the best people I've met. The most surreal lakes, meadows, valleys and peaks. Abundance of wildlife. Photos and reportage to follow... later maybe. by @reynan
