“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” — John Lennon And just like that, God had other plans 🐛🦋 Cut short due to a broken finger, my time in the Netherlands was one of the best experiences of my life and a childhood dream come true. That childhood dream started all the way back in 2009 when I watched The Netherlands beat England at Lords in the T20 World Cup. I was just an 11 year old boy in Bredasdorp watching it all on TV and at that stage I didn’t know that my life would be filled with many beautiful twists and turns and ups and downs, but one thing I did know was that I wanted to play cricket in Holland when I was older. At the age of 28 it finally happened although it was more in a coaching capacity than the playing one I envisioned as a kid (I thought I was going to be a pro! 😂). I am honoured to have shared the field and changing room with men who have played international cricket for Holland and beaten South Africa at World Cups, and a special shoutout to my new best mate and dual international, @michaelrippon19 aka “Rippers”‼️ I made many new friends in Holland and I loved getting to share the experience with two of my best mates who have been with me since Rondebosch @_ryanklein @gavinkaplan17 I am extremely grateful for the memories and learnings I’ve experienced in these past 4 weeks. Now all I can do is take it all with me and apply them to my trade in South Africa. This is not the end of my journey with @voorburgcricketclub this is only the beginning. Man, what a life. 28 🌐 Right now I’m living my dream and that’s a story for another day. Trust me, you’ll hear it soon. Today was up there with the best days of my life, and I’ve had a gun life, so you gotta know that today was special. I truly felt the love. My phone was buzzing nonstop and the boys in Holland really made me feel valued and loved. If we go back to 2011 when I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, being 28 (statistically) would’ve meant that I wouldn’t have much time left. Luckily things have changed and I’m not leaving anytime soon I don’t think. I’m truly grateful for my journey and the perspective it’s given me. Most people would kind of see having CF and my battles with mental health as a curse. I’ve seen it as the biggest blessing. I see myself as truly blessed. I see myself as equipped. I don’t see myself as basic. Every twist in the tale has simply made the story sweeter and I’m proud of the fact that I’ve got a story to tell. I look forward to what’s to come. I can’t tell you much, but the wicket is looking gun going into this next session of play. So stick around. Thank you to the people who believe in me and have my back. 🪞✨ I’ve lost many times but I remain undefeated. 🧠 Last year I ran my first 21km, I also bonked out on my second 21km during the Voet of Afrika half. In 2024 I couldn’t even run 3kms in one go. This year I set my eyes on redemption at the Voet but opted for the half’s little brother, the 10km race, which I conquered in 2024, a couple of weeks after starting Trikafta. This time round the Voet of Afrika had the better of me, again. This time my preparation simply wasn’t good enough. I know where I need to be to do better, we’ll go again. I’m just happy and grateful to be here, even if I’m walking. Just happy to be breathing better than ever. Voet, see you next time 🤝 PS. Thank you @capestormza @sportsmanswarehouseza for my shirt.
