@richardcortez’ recording of “here’s that rainy day,” featuring @addisonfrei and @rubenfoxmusic, arrives this friday.

this gentle offering, paired with “autumn in new york” and another message from granda abe, makes up the double single from cortez’ third seasonal project, iii. fall.

some things take a lifetime to understand.

23 years after my grandfather abe sent me three cassette tapes, i found myself listening to his voice again. what was once a private message, tucked away in a keepsake box, became part of a song for all seasons.

i could never have imagined that his words would travel so far, or that so many people would find a little piece of their own family in his.

i’m grateful to @people for sharing our story, and for everyone who has welcomed abe into their hearts.

i think he’d be proud.

we are never entirely our own.

a little of my grandpa abe, a little of my father, and a lifetime of becoming myself.

iii. fall arrives this friday with “what are you doing the rest of your life” being one of the many gentle autumnal offerings.

two songs for the in-between.

the last golden afternoons, the first cold evenings, the quiet beauty of a city becoming something new.

“autumn in new york” and “here’s that rainy day” are here.

thank you, @amazonmusic, for making a little room for “here’s that rainy day” on the pocket playlist. grateful for the small ways a song finds its way into the world, and for everyone who gives it a moment of their time. 🤍

millions of you have met my grandfather abe through these old recordings.

today, a little more of him, talking about life in new york.

there’s so much more of his voice woven throughout a song for all seasons. pieces of a life recorded more than twenty years ago, still finding their way into the world.

i’m glad you’re here to listen. 🤍

how lucky we are to find one another through music.

in conversation with @donewyorkcity, i talk about the great american songbook, the healing power of making music together, and the family recordings at the heart of a song for all seasons.

i think often about my grandfather abe, and how his voice has traveled farther than he could have imagined, finding its way into the lives of millions of strangers. there is something beautiful about the things we leave behind, and the ways they continue to bring us closer.

grateful to @talltalons and donyc for making room for this story, and to everyone who has listened, shared, and found a little piece of themselves in it.
