Just to let my mates know that I’m doing an hour’s talk with the esteemed writer Jason Barlow (Top Gear Editor-in-Chief, GQ and The Independent correspondent as a regular, plus lots of TV and mag top jobs historically) at the very wonderful @chalkehistoryfestival on Sunday 30 June at 15:00hrs. (@mickwalsh57 I’ve pinched your snap of me with Nigel - then David’s - Cobra. I hope you don’t mind! It’ll be there on the day, too).

Our talk is going to be on what puts the soul into great automobiles, and debates who the great magicians were through history who had the ability to create what have become the most iconic classic cars.

Jason’s astonishing new book, The Atlas of Car Design, is our guide. An amazing piece of work, it covers over 650 of the most significant cars ever produced. But the big question is…. What makes a car connect with its creator/owner/driver? What is it that melds human and machine in an almost conscious way and why do so few modern cars have that special appeal? Is the internal combustion engine really so central to man’s obsession with cars, or is it a much wider issue concerning all manner of factors from geometrics to resonances; engineering to craftsmanship; history to use and even … just plain adoration?

Do come and joins us at Chalke on Sunday June 30th. It’s a fantastic day out for all the family. Some friends are bringing some nice cars too. So that’ll be a bit special. Not least @setford_and_company and our sponsor @frontline.cars , whose restomod MGBs are phenomenal things. Come and see electric and petrol Frontlines at the talk.

Astonishing experience on Monday (and last) night at the incredible #JeffBeck tribute concert at the Albert Hall where around x15 of his friends performed for a phenomenal 4-hour stint of the finest and most moving guitar playing imaginable.

Like Beck himself, many of the assembled were modestly brilliant, rather than ‘just’ famous or commercially successful. This was an insight into a rather private world with a clutch of musicians I’d never heard of… plus a raft of all time greats and Beck’s own band regulars.

This is the mindblowing #derektrucks in full flow, with the fully appreciative #EricClapton accompanying with #doylebramhall left. Trucks was there with his amazing wife, #SusanTredeschi, another great guitarist and singer, both adding their magic to wave upon wave of epic Beck-hommage memories.

The finale featured x12 guitars at once jamming for 8 minutes to ‘Going Down’… but the pace was rip-roaring all night. Never has emotion, regard, tribute and brilliance been so real and flawless.

Thank you dear Jeannie for making it happen. And, in addition to those mentioned above, to Rod Stewart, Kirk Hammett, Ronnie Wood, Gary Clark Jr, John McLaughlin, Billy Gibbons, Imelda May, Joss Stone, Olivia Safe, Johnny Depp, Robert Randolf, Anika Nilles, Rhonda Smith, Robert Stevenson and a sprinkling of other geniuses for telling us of the unsurpassed Jeff Beck. 🙏

I was swept away this weekend by all things ‘Texture’ including this wondrous performance composed and played by @seb.carrington. ‘Texture’ was the first ever @_curiarts_ event: an inspired evening of live genius in St Mary’s Church at Bruton. Organised by two great artists themselves - Alice Victoria and Portia van de Braam - the evening saw stunningly varied and brilliant performances by Portia as her dancer self and her singer-songwriter-pianist alter ego @alviraartist, the inspired immersive electronic cello of @armedwithbow Will Langston, brilliant Dylan Thomas rendition from Christian McKay, poetry and flower art from @caly.ces and short film beauty and more…

As for Seb. Not only is he a very accomplished actor, but he composes and plays the most soaringly beautiful music. What a treat to witness this.

Curiarts is an all new venture. I encourage you to follow and come to the next one. Just a thoroughly lovely evening around a gorgeous bunch of incredibly clever people. And all for a tenner. Bliss. by @richardsutton_kythe

This is home this week. On the front cover of the Country Life Christmas number. Well, it is the next house to the left, just out of shot. Shaftesbury is such a magical place. I’ve got a two year resto project underway. But it’ll be peachy when done. And perfect for your weekend away. Can’t wait to be able to offer it. Happy Christmas to all my dear friends, many so haplessly ignored this year. 🏡🎈🎄💖 by @richardsutton_kythe

It was an historic occasion at the Festival of Speed last weekend when Jason Wright’s extraordinary ‘shark nose’ Ferrari trio were shown together for the first time.

But even this was trounced on Monday night at @setford_and_compDan Setford’s workshops near Southampton when the three sensational cars he’d recreated were joined by an original GTO, so recreating a very famous photo.

The original was taken at the Ferrari Maranello works in period when the Works cars were last presented together. It’s a photo Jason dreamed of recreating, and last Monday night he finally did it.

The original 1961 shark nose Ferrari Formula one cars - as driven by Phil Hill to World Championship victory that year - no longer exist, having been broken up and buried by Enzo Ferrari after the 1962 season. And nor does the 246SP quad-cam sports car derivative with this original body and chassis style. But Jason sourced original engines, gearboxes, innumerable parts, drawings and hundreds of photos to recreate the cars with absolute precision, right down to the last rivet.

Dan and his amazing team have spent 10 years working on the projects, sequentially.

It’s a stunning achievement in painstaking historical research, artistry, and ultimate engineering and restoration prowess.

Monday’s event, which included a celebratory dinner (chef from Rome… wow) was a surreal experience. Not least as Paul Vestey and Matt Spitzley disappeared off into the still Hampshire night in Paul’s GTO… by @richardsutton_kythe

I haven’t posted for ages but I really need to share this. The dreamy song is from @equadormusic’s new ‘Bones of Man’ Deluxe double album just released by @pegdoll Records on 180g vinyl (but limited to 300 copies). Not only is the composition, playing, singing and recording sensational (every track a cracker), but so is its packaging with mesmerically beautiful artwork by @emiliepugh.

The clip, shot last night at my home, features moving entities caught in my iPhone’s crude led light. Esotericists call them ‘orbs’, and they are - many believe - conscious entities, but in a parallel dimension not normally seen by the naked eye. They get caught in the harsh luminescence of the iPhone’s light before rapidly dispersing.

I’ve photographed many orbs over the years, usually in particular healing, sacred, megalithic or musical environments, but filming them like this is really rare. They have distinct almost cellular structures, very different from condensations, particles or reflections.

Anyway, they are there for those who want to see. I find them fascinating.

Equador’s ethereal composition and high quality production (this is vinyl at its very best) played on high end Hi Fi (Vertere, Hattor, Parasound, Entreq, Revel, MIT) conspired to manifest them. And the double album is a stunner in any event. The best £20 I’ve ever spent.

Buy it using the link in the Pegdoll bio here: @pegdoll

With a story behind it that makes Who Framed John de Lorean seem dull, the Jaguar XJR-15, created by TWR in 1991, is perhaps the most exciting and exotic road-going Jaguar of all time. So, an historic moment today at Goodwood Motor Circuit where owner Valentine Lindsay brought together the largest collection of Jaguar XJR-15s seen in one place since they campaigned in anger during just three races in 1991. And only days after @MatthewIvanhoe gathered every XJR15 in America together, too. He flew in specially to see Val’s gathering. Designed by Peter Stevens, Tony Southgate and Jim Router (all there today) the XJR-15 was a proper Group C car that was also usable on the road, in much the same way endurance racers were of old. x11 of the x50 (or x52 if you include the identical R9Rs) built were at Goodwood today and how appropriate that nearly half of them were driven there by their owners. Of the x50, x16 were race cars and x29 were road cars from new (gearbox and detail suspension differences were the only markers). There were x5 LMs too, with hood scoops in the roof and different aero treatment. For years there fabulously beautiful and exciting road racers have been overlooked by the masses and collectors alike. But Valentine and friends sorted that today with an astonishing gathering of cars, owners, and around 12 of the original drivers, too. For Peter Stevens, famous also for designing so much of the McLaren F1, this was a major moment in time. Brilliant. .

The Dorset countryside mid-summer is a quintessential English paradise. She never ceases to amaze every time I get out there and journey in her. On my last walk, just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I encountered this beautiful herd of White Park. This ancient British cattle strain used to roam freely across the northern and eastern UK, but became nearly extinct in the early 19th century. They are serene beasts to be around, highly inquisitive, very friendly to each other and exquisitely featured. What was just as incredible in a different way, is that in nearly two hours of walking I saw no-one else except my happy companion. Bathed in a symphony of birdsong we ambled between sightings of a vixen with her cubs, to 14 deer running nose-to-tail across the skyline, Kites and larks, rats and stoats and even a lone cuckoo calling in the distance. However crowded and hectic our world, it doesn’t take much to find reminding heaven in nature. Every breath of it is a divine gift to savour and makes any act that harms it a thing of indefensible evil. .
