They Shoot Puppies, Don’t They: Kristi Noem, MAGA’s Ice Queen, Joins a Canadian Mining Company. “Given her tendency for paramilitary cosplay—although in Noem’s case, I think it’s just called “wearing clothes”—any good reality-TV showrunner would have installed her as Secretary of Homeland Security. And Trump is nothing if not a good showrunner. What transpired after her appointment constitutes perhaps the greatest episode of American authoritarianism since the anti-Civil Rights kerfuffle. ICE’s violent overreach, the effective suspension of habeas corpus, the mistreatment of deportees, and the murder of two protestors? Those were not catastrophic mistakes. They were part of her workstream.” by @richpoplak
“Canadian patriotism is best expressed through the country’s beer commercials. It is thus unsurprising that the federal government’s first-ever sovereign wealth fund has a name that doubles as a beer-brand tagline: Canada Strong. You can almost see the computer generated beaver cracking open a cold one. What you can’t see is the fund’s mechanics, and that’s by design. Canadian officials have been so coy that one can only assume this is in keeping with tradition—Ottawa and the provinces’ investment/lending agencies are as dark as the blackest of hearts, encased in a ribcage of impenetrable adamantium*.” https://ballastjournalism.substack.com/p/canada-strong-and-dark-a-sovereign by @richpoplak

Adding this record store to my global favourites: Abijah Record Bar in Soweto. Not huge in footprint yet but destined to grow, with some amazing South African music (obviously) at great prices (less obviously). Oh, and the store’s Instagram account has some of the best music writing on the webs. All round, a gem in the process of being burnished. by @richpoplak
