I first saw this beautiful colonial revival house on a wonderful IG page @priceypads . It’s located in Warwick Rhode Island and most likely was built around 1895-1905. The house is based on the 1750s East Apthorp House (second and third images) in Cambridge, just off of Harvard Square. East Apthorp was a prominent loyalist in Boston who fled to England. The Rhode Island house was for sale a couple of years ago and the photos are from the original RE listing. The house was purchased and went through a remodeling and those photos are also from a RE listing. Big changes. #wepreferthebefore #colonialrevivalarchitecture #warwickri by @rickoutsidemarblehead

Detail of a print depicting some of the ship signal flags of the merchants of Salem and Beverly. It’s from a 400 page book put out by the Essex Institute in 1906 which lists the thousands of Salem ships engaged in foreign trade in the 1789-1900 period. See also a short list of ship owners depicted on the print put out by the Mariners Museum. #salem #salemmassachusetts #flags #shipflag by @rickoutsidemarblehead

White House is a large home overlooking the ocean in Nahant. A longtime favorite it was built as a Summer home for Frank and Theresa Merriam in 1888-89 with Arthur Little of Little and Browne as architect. Arthur Little was one of the originators of the shingle style in the 1870s but he soon pivoted to the colonial revival, he had also written one of the first books on 18th century American architecture. Frank and Theresa lived primarily in Back Bay. Their only child lived here for a number of years and collected American antiques. The last photo shows one of the gems from her collection, a Salem chest on chest from around 1760 that brought nearly 2 million at a 2009 auction. #nahant #colonialrevivalarchitecture #classicalarchitecture #nahantma by @rickoutsidemarblehead

On Monmouth Street in the Longwood section of Brookline. 1876 architects were George Tilden working with J. Pickering Putnam for the Amos Adams Lawrence Trust. See my earlier post today on these townhouses. 3 photos. #brookline #brooklinearchitecture #jpickeringputnam by @rickoutsidemarblehead

Continuing onward with the area on Marblehead Harbor from Crocker Park towards Fort Sewall. I’ve done pretty much up to the site of the former Boston YC (photos 4 and 19 in this mix) in previous postings so today is pretty much where the current parking lot is over to just the other side of the present day Landing Restaurant. This first photo is a great image by Samuel Chamberlain from the 1950s I’d say. The 18th century house with the gambrel roof and skylight is in the second photo as well. The ESSO pumps were just beyond the Landing outside seating. Salty Sams in the 3rd photo and Mike’s Ship Ahoy in the 17th photo are where the (former) Landing Pub is located. The 5th and 16th photos show a sunken yacht, Pirate, which sank in 1928 off of Marblehead killing 3. She’s towed to where the parking lot and rest rooms are now. The water came right up to Front Street, pretty cool. The color slide in photo 6 was taken in the 50s. Lester Hornby did the pencil sketch in 1906 with the Stearns and McKay Shipyard just off to the right. The 1880s map indicates much of the area was for coal delivery and storage. A photo of Piper is in the mix as well. She’s a launch driver for Jordan’s Launch Service and it’s great to see businesses continuing the 400 year history of boat activity on the harbor. #marblehead #marbleheadharbor #marblehead_thenandnow @allmarblehead by @rickoutsidemarblehead

On Monmouth Street and Monmouth Court in the Longwood section of Brookline. 1876-77 townhouses designed by J. Pickering Putnam for the Amos Adams Lawrence Trust. On the map from 1891 they are on the eastern side towards the Boston city line. Amos Adams Lawrence was the well known industrialist who turned Abolitionist in the 1850s and partially funded John Brown. He paid New Englanders to move to Kansas so that Kansas would remain a free state. His money started the University of Kansas, located in Lawrence. The architect teamed up with George Tilden on the designs for some of these houses, especially the ones on the western side. Putnam was an author and sort of an architectural engineer who wrote books on perfecting fireplaces and plumbing. I’ve always loved loved these townhouses…! Right at the beginning of the Aesthetic Movement they combine eclectic design with bold detailing. I’ve included a Putnam designed townhouse in Back Bay as another example. #mansardmonday #archi_ologie @archi_ologie #townhouse #brooklinema #jpickeringputnam by @rickoutsidemarblehead

A 1675 house originally built by John Capen in Dorchester and moved in 1909 to Milton as a guest house on the estate of Harvard Professor Kenneth Webster is coming back to Boston. I remember reading about this house in 2006 when it was threatened with demolition. City Archeologist Joe Bagley must have remembered as well and his team did research and found the dismantled house in Vermont. The full story follows. Also a dendrochronology report, a Capen family snippet and other photos when the house was in Dorchester (Washington Street near Melville Avenue) and then in Milton. Everett Chandler was architect of this Cambridge house in 1926. He was an early preservation minded architect who is best known for his work on the House of Seven Gables and the Paul Revere House. Two photos. #cambmaarchitecture #everettchandler #colonialrevivalarchitecture by @rickoutsidemarblehead
