Green River’s Dry as a Bone / Rehab Doll dropped on Sub Pop. Two early releases packed together with some bonus tracks—pure Seattle history right here. Recorded ’85–’88, this one’s a true grunge building block.

In Utero is the third and final studio album by American band Nirvana, released on September 21, 1993, by DGC Records. After breaking into the mainstream with their second album, Nevermind (1991), Nirvana hired Steve Albini to record In Utero, seeking a more complex, abrasive sound.

Recording took place over two weeks in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.

In Utero was a major commercial and critical success. Critics praised the change in sound and Cobain’s lyrics. It reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart; “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The album is certified five-times platinum and has sold 15 million copies.

I meant to put this up earlier today and got sidetracked but, didn’t want to miss this one!

September 8, 1992… Sweet Oblivion dropped, and Screaming Trees were about to get the recognition they deserved.

Their sixth album, but the one that really broke through. Then came “Nearly Lost You,” landing on the Singles soundtrack and suddenly Screaming Trees were everywhere, right in the middle of that Seattle grunge explosion. Over 300,000 copies sold, and honestly… this album just hit different.

Mark Pickerel had stepped away from the drums, and Barrett Martin came in, bringing a whole new energy and power to the band.
Sweet Oblivion is one of those records that takes me straight back. Gritty. Raw. A little dark. Completely Seattle.

What a fu*king time that was. The music, the scene, the memories… you just can’t recreate it.

OTD • August 30, 1989 • “Loud Love”
August 30, 1989… Soundgarden released “Loud Love.”

There’s just something about this song. That opening, Chris Cornell’s voice, the heaviness of it… you just FEEL it.

Soundgarden was part of something happening in Seattle that would go on to change music forever. Recorded at London Bridge Studios, @londonbridgestudio “Loud Love” is one of those songs that takes you right back to that time.

What a time in our lives that was. So much incredible music, so many memories, and a Seattle scene that changed everything.
Chris had a voice that you couldn’t mistake for anyone else. Raw, powerful, emotional… and that voice still gives me chills.
Some songs you hear. Others you feel.

“Loud Love” is definitely one of those songs for me.
Turn it up today and let that Seattle sound shake the walls! ❤️‍🔥

Alice in Chains shot the video for their first single ‘We Die Young’

We Die Young’ is about gang violence. That was something that was happening in Seattle, something that kinda opened our eyes. It just seemed like things were getting out of hand. Incidents where kids were getting shot, and getting their tennis shoes ripped off their dead bodies. It just seems like these kids are dying at younger and younger ages and getting involved in gang activity.”

Pearl Jam released their debut studio album, Ten, through Epic Records—and the rest, as they say, is history.

After the heartbreaking end of Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard weren’t ready to let the music die. They teamed up with guitarist Mike McCready, and with drummer Matt Cameron, recorded a five-song instrumental demo that would set everything in motion. That demo eventually found its way to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder—who flew to Seattle, auditioned, and helped complete the lineup.

Many of the songs on Ten began as instrumental jams or were reworked from Mother Love Bone ideas, with Vedder bringing his own lyrics, melodies, and unmistakable emotion to the music.

Recorded at London Bridge Studio in Seattle with producer Rick Parashar and the band, Ten became far more than a debut album. It became a defining record of the ’90s and helped change the sound of a generation forever.

🎂🖤 Happy Birthday, Layne Staley. 🖤🎂

Today we celebrate the life, the voice, the talent, and the incredible human being that was Layne Staley.

There are some people who come into this world and leave an impact that simply cannot be measured. Layne was one of those people.

His voice was unmistakable. His lyrics were raw, honest, vulnerable, and painfully beautiful. But for so many of us, it went far beyond music. Layne’s words found us when we needed them most. His music became a place to go, a place to feel, and a reminder that maybe we weren’t as alone as we thought we were.

I know how deeply his music changed my life, and I know I’m not alone. His music and lyrics touched so many of us in ways that will forever be remembered.

And I love remembering Layne the person, too.

Susan Silver described him as a “sweet, ego-free jokester who loved practical jokes.” She also remembered that he didn’t have the typical ego of a frontman and didn’t put up emotional walls. In the early days, instead of hiding from fans, Layne would sit outside a mini-mart and share snacks with people who recognized him.

That says so much about him.

Behind that incredible voice was a guy who could be funny, goofy, playful, and completely down to earth.

That’s the Layne I want to remember.

The artist. The songwriter. The jokester. The beautiful, complicated, incredibly talented human being who left an imprint on this world that will never be erased.

Layne, you changed my life. Your music got me through things I never thought I’d get through. And I know so many others feel the exact same way.

Today, I’m not focusing on how your story ended. I’m celebrating how much you gave us while you were here.

Thank you for the music.
Thank you for the words.
Thank you for the laughter.
Thank you for being you.

Your voice may have gone quiet, but your music never will.

Happy Birthday, Layne. 🖤

You are loved. You are missed. And you will never be forgotten. 📸©️Karen Mason-Blair @karenmasonblair • Fine Art America
