Last night I won two 1st Place Awards at the San Diego Press Club's Excellence in Journalism Awards.

Not bad for my first year at KPBS! Onward!

Pearl Diner permanently closed in June. However, not all hope is lost the diner owners would love to reopen the diner to any restauranteur willing to help bring Pearl back to her glory. Extensive renovations are needed but they are offering a 15-year lease so if anyone is interested do hit me up, I can help connect you. I wanted to have breakfast there anyway and somehow I thought of another New York gal that didn’t stop having breakfast somewhere she loved just because they weren’t open and didn’t serve food. Hence this homage to diners and old New York. Incidentally this diner opened a year after this film was made so it’s of the same era. You too can recreate this scene by eating breakfast at Pearl Diner yourself by grabbing a coffee and danish at Squires Diner which is the nearest diner just a couple blocks away. I considered this my version of a funeral. Yes, you can have funerals for things other than people. And, I swear if I have to explain satire to anyone I’m going to choke on my anthora cup. #dinersofnyc #pearldiner #diner #americana #oldmovie by @rileyart

SPRING/BREAK was incredible. We must have said welcome to Plastic Orchard hundreds of times in the over 50 hours we greeted art lovers. What a treat to share what you love with so many people. @cincinnatiartunderground @rileyart @springbreakartshow by @rileyart

Orchard, in the wild. 🍓🍊
A cup of coffee + some wild dreams, and six months later—voilà.
It became Plastic Orchard at SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York.
Riley Arthur and I made a room about fruit, girlhood, whimsy, nostalgia, the environment, and the strange relationship between things that grow old and things that never do.
The flowers wilt.
The fruit decays.
The girls grow up.
The plastic stays exactly the same.
One of my favorite parts was watching people walk into the room and immediately smile. They pointed. They nudged each other. They told us which Strawberry Shortcake character they had. They remembered bedrooms, toys, smells, colors, childhood friends.
Then they stayed and looked longer.
That part mattered to me. The work can be sweet and funny and ridiculous—and still hold something underneath it.
Thank you Rachael Moore and Cincinnati Art Underground for bringing this project to SPRING/BREAK, and to Riley Arthur for building this wonderfully strange orchard with me.
And thank you to SPRING/BREAK everyone who came through, talked with us, looked closely, bought work, told us stories, or simply stood in the middle of our fake grass smiling.
I’m still figuring out exactly what this project is becoming.
Which is probably the best part.

Earlier this week I was interviewed for a movie on — you guessed it — diners! Prometheus Project is currently making a documentary called DINER, an American Institution and asked me to be a part of it. So I suggested we film in a #nycdiner and they chose Red Flame Diner, who were so hospitable. There is so much to say about New York City diners, I hope I made you all proud. I’ve worked as a scout for tv shows and consulted on other films for diner related questions but I’ve never been in front of the camera for a film talking about diners. These guys are pros and I can’t wait for you all to see it! #dinersofnyc #prometheusprojects #redflamediner #diner by @rileyart
