Meet Steve & Koby — the guys behind Rise. If you've spent any time around Rise, you've probably heard their names. But you might not know the two guys behind the rods. Steve Bechard started Rise in 2011 after years as a guide, competition caster, and custom rod builder. He'd spent enough time around fly rods to know what he liked and, more importantly, what everyday anglers actually needed. His idea was pretty simple: build great rods, test them with real anglers, and sell them directly without adding a bunch of extra cost along the way. He's still pretty serious about that first part. Every Rise rod is tested by anglers in the real world, not just by the people who designed it. And if you ask Steve what he likes to fish, good luck getting a straight answer. Permit. Dry-fly browns. Carp. A 60"+ roosterfish with an old friend and favorite guide. He's got a lot of favorites. Then there's Koby. Koby joined Rise after spending 20 years in the hunting industry and somehow managed to turn his love of fishing into a job where he handles marketing, sales, distribution, IT and, apparently, anything else that needs doing. His favorite fish is trout, although bonefish are quickly making a case for second place. His dream trip is Argentina for golden dorado, which he describes as basically a super-aggressive trout. And his best fishing advice? Quit playing golf and go fishing. Honestly, that's probably a pretty good summary of both of these guys. At the heart of Rise, they're a small, grassroots company built around family, friends, fish, and a genuine love of being on the water. They're also two of the most fun people you'll meet—which is probably why the company feels a lot more like a fishing community than a traditional fly rod brand. So now that you know Steve & Koby... Tell us about you! What's the fish, place, or trip that keeps you coming back? 🎣 by @risefishingco

For Capt. Dave Flanagan, fly fishing has always been tied to family. He was ten years old when his dad, an NYPD narcotics officer, started saltwater fly fishing in the mid-90s after his captain picked it up. Dave saw the fly rod and immediately wanted to be part of it. His dad’s first setup was a Cortland 444 6-weight, and together they caught just about anything they could with it. Eventually, they made their way to the Delaware River, where they learned the sport more seriously with Lee Hartman and Indian Springs Fly Fishing Camp. Decades later, Dave is still building his life around the same thing that pulled him in as a kid. Fishing. Not just the catching part, either. The early mornings. The weather. The birds. The bait. The feeling of knowing a place well enough to notice when something changes. The people you share it with. Dave has been guiding Long Island waters for nine years, and when he talks about why he started, the answer is simple. “I wanted to be on the water more, share my passion with others and still be able to one day have a family and support them. To be honest, fishing is the one thing that I know best. To be able to make a living by taking other people fishing, the way that I want to fish, is the ultimate dream in my mind and why I do it.” That dream these days looks a lot like striped bass. They’re his favorite fish because they never really let you settle into one way of doing things. You can sight fish for them in skinny water, throw topwater along a boulder field, dredge deep current or find them crushing bunker in open water. They’ll eat something barely bigger than your thumbnail and, on another day, chase down a two-pound bluefish. “They are every man’s fish.” Ask Dave to describe a perfect day and he can see it clearly. A spring morning. Before first light. A little fog, maybe a slight drizzle. No other trucks at the ramp. The tide just starting to trickle out of the marsh while bass crush spearing and sand eels in the drains. The Rise 8-weight Shearwater comes out and a few fish make it to hand early. Then it’s out to the grounds. More of Dave’s story in the comments! ⬇️ by @risefishingco
Salmon Camp 2026 in the books! An annual tradition, good fishing, and even better company. This year was extra special as the next generation joint camp. The fishing keeps us coming back, but it’s the friendships, stories, and time spent together that make this trip what it is. Another year in the books. Until next time!🤝 #RiseFishingCo #SalmonCamp #FlyFishing #NewYork by @risefishingco

He told his wife guiding would help supplement their income. The truth? “I just wanted to fish.” More than 33 years later, Paul Dixon is still doing exactly that. It started when Paul was 16, working as a boat boy on Henry’s Lake in Idaho. Many of the old timers spending their summers there were from the San Francisco Casting Club. They taught him to fly fish, and he fell in love with it. Eventually Paul moved East, opened a fly shop on Long Island, and quickly realized he didn’t want to spend his days stuck inside. Guiding solved that problem. Today he splits his time between Montauk and the Florida Keys, mostly hunting striped bass and tarpon. Give him bright sun, a great caster and targets to throw at and you’ve pretty much built his perfect day. Sight fishing is his game of choice. Favorite fish? Probably tarpon. They come in every size, inhabit wildly different places, and, as Paul says, “the elephant that eats peanuts” rings true. But if it were his last days on earth? Wading for big bonefish. After three decades behind the rod, his advice is still simple: practice, practice, practice. And when it comes together, don’t let go of your fly line. Let it run through your hand. Line control is everything. His go-to? A Rise Shearwater 9wt, Cortland Redfish Taper floating line and usually a 12’ 16-lb leader. Down south, some sort of crab fly gets the nod- a pattern he’ll throw for stripers up north, too. Second choice: an epoxy minnow developed by Bob Popovics. One of his most memorable days was fishing with Popovics and Lance Irwin on the ocean side of Key Largo, landing one of the largest tarpon Paul has caught. “Pure chaos and laughter.” And the pre-fishing drink after 33 years? Black coffee. Post-fishing? Black coffee. “One to get you going and the other to keep you going.” More from Paul in the comments ↓ by @risefishingco
