Today, Krishna Das fills rooms with kirtan. But in 2002, he was convicted of money laundering connected to drug proceeds.

His spiritual career was already well established.

The music is celebrated. The history deserves to be known, too.

In 1990 the Dalai Lama was asked about self-hatred and could not place what was being described. He questioned his translator, then questioned him again, apparently convinced something had been mistranslated. Then he asked the room how many of them knew the feeling. Most did. Teachers, psychologists, scientists, all of them Western.

The neat version of this story is that Tibetan has no word for it. That is not quite right. Tibetan has terms for hatred, for aversion, and for states turned toward oneself. Translators have argued since over which comes closest, and none map cleanly.

What seems to have been missing is narrower and stranger. Not the vocabulary. The habit of aiming contempt at yourself and treating the verdict as an accurate assessment rather than a mood.

Where that habit comes from is not settled. What is not in doubt is that it was learned, and recently enough that in 1990 it still needed explaining.

The oldest thing in most houses is older than anyone living in them. by @rishikeshcollective

Amazon sold under a thousand ice baths in November 2022. A year later, over ninety thousand.

The tub you keep seeing barely existed as a thing you could buy three years ago. Then it was on every rooftop and in every third reel.

The research did not keep up. A 2025 review in PLOS One gathered eleven proper trials, about three thousand people, water between seven and fifteen degrees. Stress did drop, but not until roughly twelve hours later. Men slept better. Women, in the data, did not. There was no steady effect on mood, and none on immunity, which are the two things it is mostly sold for.

In several of those trials the improvement barely beats a placebo. That is not the gotcha it sounds like. Part of what is working is the cold. Part is everything around the cold: the two minutes you promised yourself, the person counting you down, the small proof that you can do a hard thing before breakfast. Those are real. They were just not on the box.

The cold does something. So does the ritual you built around it. Both are real. Neither is quite what ninety thousand people thought they were paying for. by @rishikeshcollective
