Tomorrow's @rose.city.writers Workshop will be VIRTUAL this month, rather than in person. You can still grab tickets and learn how to design your own creatures/monsters! Attendees will also receive a discount code to buy Cale Plett's books at River Bookshop. You can buy tickets through our website—just visit riverbookshop.com and click VISIT to find the event. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP What makes a monster truly terrifying? In this interactive workshop, we’ll dissect classic monsters, explore monster theory, and uncover what our creatures of the night reveal about society’s deepest fears, cultural anxieties, and biases. Together, we’ll examine how monsters are created, why certain things frighten us, and how horror reflects the world we live in. Then, we’ll put theory into practice, experimenting with the elements that make a monster deeply unsettling before unleashing our imaginations to create our own terrifying creatures. Whether you’re a horror enthusiast, a writer, an artist, or simply fascinated by the things that go bump in the night, come ready to get creative, think critically, and discover what makes a monster truly monstrous. ABOUT CALE PLETT CALE PLETT is a nonbinary, genderfluid writer who lives on Treaty One Territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Our teen book club has been requesting something a little scarier, so this one is a magical mystery with scary spirits, and described as a darkly magical romantic tale. The Hollow and The Haunted by Camilla Raines features Miles Warren who hails from a long line of psychics. Resigned to life in the family business, until he starts having visions of an unfamiliar boy, Gabriel, whose family has had a mysterious decades long feud with his own. But just because Gabriel hails from the irritatingly rude Hawthorne family, doesn't mean Miles will stand by and let someone kill him. As they begin an alliance of solving mystery and murder while dark magic swirls around them, Miles realized he doesn't hate Gabriel as legacy wants him to. In fact maybe its the opposite. We hope you read this months teen selection and join us on Monday, November 23rd for our discussion group at 6:30 PM. by @river.bookshop
Our Junior Book Club is enjoying the spooky season with their latest read, Nightbooks by J.A. White. Nightbooks is the story of Alex, who loves to read scary stories, but now he is trapped in one. After sneaking out in the middle of the night, he becomes imprisoned by a witch. His only chance for escape is by reading one of his own tales, but what is he runs out of tales and time? Join us in reading this thrilling reinvention of Hansel and Gretel, filled with folklore and fortitude. Our next meetup will take place Saturday, November 21st at 2 PM. by @river.bookshop
