POSTS STORIES REELS

Études No. 2 by @rivr.wind

It's trending once again to talk about / delete instagram & other socials.

I've been writing about the villainy for years. I've seen it ruin peoples lives, lost friends over comments, etc.

I think at moments of absurdity when we can't say if something is bad enough, there's a big question at hand.

It's not about the platform, it's about relationships:
Our relationship with ourselves.
Our relationship with presence and possibility.
Our relationship to downtime, relaxation, and rest.
And maybe most profoundly, our relationships with each other.

The thing that keeps people on Socials in the end, is the social-izing.
" I'll miss out if I'm not on here...", etc.
It's true, you will.

But if you consciously move on, consciously setting aside the habits born from this platform, and instead expand into other possibilities within community, you might realize you were missing other things.

I can't tell you how many times I've popped on here, to see stories and posts by friends I haven't heard from in months or years. They haven't had time to connect, write a letter, etc, but gol durn danggit do they have time to post some IG. (it's fine, I understand—seriously!)

I know, it takes more effort to text someone, you gotta have this special thing called "accountabilty" with that realm. And accountability is where real relationship comes in, because that's also called "effort."

Yes yes, I know IG is also just fun. I agree. But dang. At what cost?

I mostly post on my newsletter now, and the audience seems to be growing smaller and smaller. That's hard, to be honest, because some part of me has an idea that success correlates with a number, or an increase.

But I'm trying to let that part go, and focus instead on quality of connection. On presence.

About taking in too much

𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒘𝒌
Sky, dark
night sounds.
The metal bridge.
Inlet, woodsmoke,
water, lights, boats.
My hands under small lit
hand rails, sliding up
lengthwise, across
where I walk
in the daylight.
Nighttime silence.
Contrivance.
The smooth, dark night-like air
scent of moss, insects
streets
neighborhoods
fields
ponds
trees.
