💎 Between the Jōmon period and plastic packaging. For Ayaka Terajima, clay holds two very different times at once: the prehistoric pottery of Japan’s Jōmon period, which spanned from 14,000 to 800 BCE, and the modern plastic packaging born from the logistics that order time and space. Her unglazed sculptures are made from recycled clay, often shaped with discarded plastic packaging as moulds. They sit between archaeology and science fiction — ancient artefacts and future creatures at once. In the Jōmon period, snakes and the moon were universal symbols of material regeneration: the moon of the exhibition title. “In my sculptures, I juxtapose the aesthetic of traditional ceramic craftsmanship with the aesthetic of contemporary mass production and design.” Packed Space under the Moon is Ayaka Terajima’s first solo exhibition in Düsseldorf, with ceramic sculptures in various sizes and recent works on paper made with oil pastels and supermarket flyers. 📅 - Opening: Saturday, 14 November 2026, 6 pm Works on view until 9 January 2027. Opening hours: Fridays, 4–6 pm; Saturdays, 11 am–1 pm; or by appointment. PACKED SPACE UNDER THE MOON Ayaka Terajima - Solo Show - Düsseldorf “I draw inspiration from plastic packaging and from the symbolism of the moon in prehistory. In Japan’s prehistoric Jōmon period, snakes and the moon were universal symbols of material regeneration; snakes in particular often appeared as decorative motifs on ceramic vessels. There are also historical accounts of the belief that rain came from the moon, and that this rainwater was collected in ceramic vessels to be used in funeral rites.” — Ayaka Terajima @ayakaterajima Trained in Japanese traditional ceramics and fine arts, Ayaka Terajima looks at how design and materiality are transformed in the process of mass production, and at the material and spiritual regenerations we face in contemporary society. Every family has a box of slides. Morgaine Schäfer works with the hundreds of 35 mm slides her father took in the 1970s and 1980s, above all of her mother, newly arrived in Germany from Poland. She projects them, enlarges them, rephotographs them through a smartphone screen, and follows the women of her family back to her grandmother's aunt, a deaconess. A memory that is constructed, not inherited. Martina Sauter | Morgaine Schäfer Constructed Memory Until 28 November 2026 Via Maletto 5, Palermo · Tue–Sat, 3–7 pm by @rizzutogallery_
We remember films as if they were our own lives. Martina Sauter rephotographs stills from Hitchcock, Lynch and 1940s noir on 35 mm film, sets them beside rooms she builds herself, and in her newest works lets AI invent images from the pages of a 1950s novel. A memory that is constructed, not inherited. Martina Sauter | Morgaine Schäfer Constructed Memory Until 28 November 2026 Via Maletto 5, Palermo · Tue–Sat, 3–7 pm by @rizzutogallery_

A film still. A father's slide. Martina Sauter and Morgaine Schäfer, who trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Thomas Ruff and Christopher Williams respectively, start from images they did not take and rebuild them into a memory that is constructed, not inherited.
