From diet soda to sugar free gum, aspartame has become one of the world’s most widely used artificial sweeteners. Praised for helping reduce sugar consumption, yet criticized for potential health risks, it remains one of the most controversial food additives in modern nutrition.  This week, RLC will develop credible opinions on aspartame consumption through a deep dive into its mechanism of action, metabolism, and associated health risks. Together, we’ll find an educated answer to the question: is aspartame a miracle substitute, or a sweet killer? To kickstart your own investigation, check out this week’s diving board paper: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10822749/ Hope to see you all this Thursday, 06/04 @ 7:30PM! This week, RLC will be discussing the world’s second most commonly used psychoactive substance: nicotine. Nicotine consumption has long been associated with an array of health complications due to commonly used, but harmful modes of delivery such as smoking and vaping. Nicotine as a compound, however, has also been linked to potential therapeutic applications in diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. In RLC this week we then plan to tackle the question: is nicotine ever worth it? To build some background and to kickstart your own investigation to bring to Thursday’s meeting, check out our diving board paper linked below. Hope to see you all there! (location announced day of).
