6 stoles, 5 cords, and many many awards later… B.A Global Studies: Business & Economic Development Minors in Law & Asian Studies Language Proficiency Certificate in Mandarin Chinese 中文 Next stop: Dr.Lewis by @rllewis21
In less than 24 hours, I will walk across the stage as a first-generation college graduate. While that means I am the first in my immediate family to earn a four-year degree, this accomplishment belongs to far more than just me. I grew up watching my mother work tirelessly to ensure I could pursue higher education debt-free. Over the years, I’ve also learned about the generations before me—family members who served in the military, worked the land, built stability for their children, and persevered through systems designed to deny them opportunity. This year, my studies and research deepened my understanding of Black American history, culture, and resilience. I am reminded that my education is only possible because of the sacrifices, strength, and wisdom of those who came before me.To my mother, my ancestors whose names I know, and those whose names have been lost to history: thank you. I cross this stage carrying your legacy with me. 🖤🎓 by @rllewis21
Fifteen years ago, I joined an educational nonprofit that has a mission: breaking generational poverty through academic and professional opportunity. From 4th through 8th grade, every summer was spent in the program. Ironically, every winter I found myself taking classes in the Korman Center. Little did 9-year-old me know that it wouldn’t be the last time Korman or Drexel, would see me. Steppingstone, now @heightsphilly describes itself as an economic mobility catalyst for BIPOC and first-generation students. Back then, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. Today, as a graduating senior with three co-ops under my belt, fluency in the world’s most-spoken language, a debt-free education, and a community of scholars, mentors, and leaders behind me, I do. Breaking generational curses has a pretty good ROI… it worked so well the price went up🎓💸 #ForeverDragons by @rllewis21
