Legal action charity fighting for the rights of refugees and migrants. We deliver frontline services, and campaign for change. Join us! 🙌

POSTS STORIES REELS

ICYMI on Monday Tory MP Nick Timothy attacked us online by spreading clear misinformation. Let’s set the record straight.👇🏽

Government funding helps charities like Refugee and Migrant Justice deliver essential frontline services, including legal advice and support for people facing homelessness and destitution.

Not a penny of the government funding we receive goes towards campaigning or lobbying.

And no, we’ve never advocated for open borders. We advocate for fair decisions, access to legal advice and an immigration system that works.

Supporting people isn’t a scandal. Smearing charities for doing essential work shouldn’t be a political strategy.

Watch our response. 👇🏽 and help us sharing if you believe these politician don’t represent you or your communities 🙌🏽 by @rmjustice_uk

📍We’ll be outside Parliament at 3 pm today , come and join us!

If you aren’t able to make it, you can always support the lobby and the rally from home.

☝️The government wants to make it harder, longer, more expensive and more precarious for migrants and refugees to settle in the UK. They call it “earned settlement.” We call it what it is:

💬A racist and classist hostile environment with a new name.🕳

💯 From the streets to Parliament — we mobilise. We organise.💯

🖐 In solidarity with thousands of people demanding:

✊ 5 years is long enough
✊ No to “earned settlement”
✊ End the hostile environment
✊ Stop using immigration status to exploit workers or exclude refugees
✊ Settlement is a right — not a privilege

Imagine spending 10 years building your life in the UK, only to be told you could face another decade before you can settle. That's exactly how our client and many tens of thousands of parents across the UK will be feeling following Shabana Mahmood's announcement on Monday.

People who work long hours, raise British children and were told they could settle after 10 years now face the prospect of an additional decade of waiting.

And for what? For the supposed "crime" of receiving basic support they were entitled to, without ever being told it could count against them. People should not be penalised for accessing support they had every right to receive.

Changing the rules after people have spent years working towards settlement is deeply unfair. The Government must protect people already on a route to settlement rather than moving the goalposts.

It doesn't have to be this way. by @rmjustice_uk

Shabana Mahmood just provided details about the Government's so-called “Earned Settlement Model”, following a consultation that received more than 200,000 responses.

The Government's own analysis found that 84% of individual respondents and 79% of organisations disagreed with the proposed changes to the settlement framework. The message was clear: people do not support these plans. It begs the question why a consultation was held at all if the result was already predetermined.

While limited exemptions for some care workers and freeing workers tied to exploitative employers represent a recognition of the pressure against these proposals, this does not go nearly far enough.

The Earned Settlement Model needs scrapping in its entirety. Let's be clear about what these proposals represent: they are classist and racist.

These proposals will make life worse for everyone: migrants who have built their lives here, the charities supporting them, and the Government itself. Extending settlement routes will create further insecurity, increase the demand for advice and support services, and undermine the stability that allows people to contribute to their communities. It will also create far more work than a beleaguered Home Office can manage.

Our research has already highlighted the devastating consequences these changes could have for families and children on the 10-year family and private life route.

We found that 90% of parents would feel forced to give up access to public funds in exchange for a shorter settlement period. Half of those parents predicted that doing so would mean their children would go without essentials.

There is no public interest in pushing children into poverty to make a political point about contribution.

An exemption for one group cannot justify a system that will leave so many others behind. We need the Government to go further and scrap the Earned Settlement Model altogether.

Settlement should provide security, not become another source of hardship! by @rmjustice_uk

We’ve become increasingly aware of, and concerned about, the government’s use of AI in decision-making in both asylum and immigration cases.

In immigration cases, we’re noticing less human involvement when reviewing internal decision-making notes, especially when compared with notes from applications made years earlier.

We’ve also seen decisions rely on phantom “Country Policy and Information Notes”, raising serious concerns about how defective this AI software can be and the consequences for people whose lives depend on these decisions.

We’re delighted that Nick Beales, Refugee and Migrant Justice’s Head of Campaigns, contributed to this piece in The Independent exploring @openrightsgroup ‘s excellent and extensive research on AI use in asylum decision-making.

Technology should help to produce fairer, more accurate decisions, not produce unreliable decisions that do not account for the human realities and complexities of those going through asylum and immigration processes. AI cannot be a substitute for robust, human engagement with the case presented.

A new Prime Minister brings an opportunity to choose a different approach to immigration and asylum. RMJ legal experts see every day how current policies keep people in uncertainty, separate families and make an already overstretched system harder to navigate. It doesn't have to be this way!

We're calling on Andy Burnham to take three immediate steps:

🚮 Scrap the Immigration and Asylum Bill.
🚮 Scrap the “Earned Settlement Model”
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Reinstate family reunion rights.

The choices made now will shape the lives of thousands of people for years to come!

Read our latest blog to find out why these three changes should be at the top of the new Prime Minister's agenda.

WE FOUGHT FOR MARIANNE AND EVE'S SAFETY — AND WON! We turned a refused asylum claim into a life-changing court victory. ⚖

Marianne and her daughter Eve fled domestic violence in 2024, seeking safety in the UK. However, despite clear evidence of abuse and the failure of authorities in their home country to protect them, the UK government refused their asylum claim.

At Refugee and Migrant Justice, we refused to give up, knowing there was a way to challenge this injustice.

We took the government to court, and finally, justice has been served! The Court recognised the serious risks Marianne and Eve would face in their home country, acknowledging their vulnerability and the impact of trauma.

Today, Marianne and Eve have both been granted refugee status. They can finally begin rebuilding their lives in safety. This victory is a powerful reminder of why access to justice and expert legal representation matter. This wouldn’t have happened without expert legal representation by @gardencourtchambers

Everyone deserves safety. Everyone deserves protection. Everyone deserves justice.

Congratulations, Marianne and Eve!

Settlement should be a pathway to integration, not a barrier. 🤝🏽🏡

Many migrant families on the 10-year route have built their lives in the UK 🇬🇧, and making it harder, costlier 💸, and longer ⏳ for them will harm the lives of their British children

This is not who we are. We can do better than this. ✊🏽

Yesterday hundreds of people from across the UK attended a mass lobby in Parliament 🏛️ calling on MPs to oppose these cruel, counterproductive proposals. This proves that collective and organised action can fix this! 🙌🏽📣

We won’t stop here. We’ll continue to build pressure until the government scraps the earned settlement plans entirely. 🔁⚖️

We are very proud of our Freedom at 10 group members for showing up in force 💪🏽, sharing their first-hand experience of the immigration system with over 10 different MPs 🗣️.

If you oppose these changes, you can still take action! ✍🏽

FINAL PUSH: Help us get 10,000 signatures to Andy Burnham!

Andy Burnham has committed to ending rough sleeping. But his Government continues to push forward their earned settlement plans.

Plans that will make more people homeless and put tens of thousands more children in poverty.

We're expecting an announcement on the plans any day now. This is our last chance to get our voices heard and these devastating policies scrapped.

Tell Burnham to bin the earned settlement plans - comment 'bin the plans' and we'll DM you the link. by @rmjustice_uk

A brighter future for Ibrahim! 🎉

After years of immigration uncertainty, Ibrahim can finally plan his future with confidence.

Our legal team at Refugee & Migrant Justice helped him secure Indefinite Leave to Remain on 6 October 2026, opening up new opportunities for his studies, career and future.

His success also shows why campaigning matters. Thanks to @webelong19 efforts to shorten settlement routes for young adults, Ibrahim didn’t face a decade of unnecessary waiting.

Young people deserve stability and opportunities, not prolonged uncertainty.

Congratulations, Ibrahim! 💚 by @rmjustice_uk

We’re urgently fundraising to cover the cost of flights, so that families separated by conflict can be back together again.

We’re working with families who have been granted permission to be reunited here in the UK. After years of support from our legal team, we’ve made it possible for people to be back with the ones they love. But there is one final thing stopping them from being reunited – the cost of a plane ticket.
