POSTS STORIES REELS
This is my journey from selling sneakers from a catalogue in Year 9, to founding a global running brand. Of course, this is just a surface level glimpse. The tales of highs and lows weave themselves into every crevice of this journey. Hopefully there are many more stories still to come. by @robbieball.co
☀️👟 GOLD COAST MARATHON DAY ZERO: BUMP-IN DAY 0️⃣ I'm not going to lie to you, that was tough. I knew it was going to be, but you can never really be ready. When I look around at some of the big, big brands that are on display here, they have accordingly big bump-in teams. Trucks, people, equipment. The whole setup. Today it was me, and my Dad who flew in to give me a hand. It was a massive effort. We're not even close to being the biggest setup, not the best, not the most impactful, but I actually really am proud of the setup and where we have come from in a short space of time. We were basically first in the door at 8am, and the last to leave. The event hadn't even opened yet today, but I could hear other merchants walk past and whisper 'oh I've seen them everywhere'. Interestingly, some brands that you wouldn't expect have decided to bring out running vests here! 👀 Mind you, they're off the shelf, poorly designed with their logo slapped on them, but they clearly see a trend happening. A massive day zero, looking forward to meeting many of you over the next few days. Time for 😴 Robbie by @robbieball.co
However you got here, here's what you can expect 🫡 by @robbieball.co
New market unlocked 😂🤌🏼 by @robbieball.co
20 cents for a bag. I get why brands do it. It cuts a cost and adds a bit of revenue at the same time. On a spreadsheet, it makes sense. But think about the moment it happens. The customer has just chosen you. They’ve paid. And the last thing they experience is being charged for something that’s always been part of the service. That small moment leaves a sour taste, and it’s the one they walk out with. Now flip it. The bag is the last thing a customer touches in your store, and the first thing everyone else sees. It walks around the shopping centre with your logo on it. Make it good enough and it doesn’t stop there. It goes to the market on Saturday. On the train to work. On the school run. A good bag doesn’t need to cost much. It just needs to be something people want to hold onto. That’s not a cost. That’s the cheapest billboard you’ll ever buy. Stop charging for the bag. Start building one people want to carry. by @robbieball.co
Saucony just dropped 4 different marathon shoes. I’ve had a proper look at the collection. Some I’d buy straight away. Some I’d leave on the shelf. I’ll tell you which is which in the video. And tell me which one you’d grab. Run well. by @robbieball.co
Nobody tells you the side effects of being a brand founder. I took no pay for two years. My brand could’ve died about five times in its first 20 months. I've had genuinely sleepless nights. I think about work walking the dog, in the shower & making dinner. And that’s only some of it. It is an all-consuming process. Read this before you go “full-time founder”. This is the commitment and sacrifice. Swipe through for the five I wish someone had warned me about. None of this is a complaint. I’d do it again, and again. But if you’re in the middle of it right now, you’re not behind, you're not doing it wrong. This is how it is. by @robbieball.co
New Balance just dropped their NYC Marathon collection. I went through it and pulled out the pieces that caught my eye. Let’s see what’s a pass and what’s a buy. Which one would you grab? by @robbieball.co
24 hours as a running brand founder in Melbourne Marathon week. Early starts, flat out all day, heaps of coffee. Wouldn’t have it any other way. by @robbieball.co
Nobody tells you the sacrifice part of building a brand. For two years, every dollar went back into @runly.athletics and none came to me. We nearly died five times. I’m still here. If you’re in that stage, don’t give up. Run well. by @robbieball.co
New York turns 50, and the merch is going big. The 2024 marathon generated almost US$700 million. $51 million was visitors shopping. New Balance split its collection into three drops. Then added sunglasses and personalised jewellery. Honestly, it’s clever. For a lot of runners, this is a once in a lifetime race. They want something to remember it by, not just another shirt. Good idea, or getting a bit much? by @robbieball.co
We had a pop-up at the Melbourne Marathon expo this year. Everyone asks what it costs, so I’ve broken it all down in the video. Rent, transport, wages and the extras. If you’re a small brand thinking about an expo, have a watch first. Run well. by @robbieball.co
