The Process of Making Hand Crafted Boots (Short)

Roberto Robledo owns and operates a respected shoemaking business in Albuquerque, New Mexico, located in the vibrant Nob Hill area. A master of his craft, Roberto has spent 45 years honing his skills as a Zapatero. His passion for shoemaking is unwavering, and despite the challenges facing his trade, he has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

Originally from Juarez, Mexico, Roberto grew up surrounded by shoemaking. His father and brothers were all skilled Zapateros, and his own journey into the craft was almost inevitable. In Juarez, Roberto ran a small shoe-repair shop, but his desire to provide a better life for his family led him to relocate to Albuquerque. In just two months, he was able to earn more than he could have in five years working in Juarez, a testament to his exceptional talent and the opportunities that awaited him in the U.S.

Roberto’s work is deeply personal. He customizes every pair of boots to match his customers’ unique visions, crafting each piece with remarkable attention to detail. With the ability to use only hand tools, he is able to create boots that are not just functional, but also works of art. His ability to bring a customer’s dream vision to life is one of the many reasons why his business continues to thrive.

Sadly, the art of boot making is becoming increasingly rare, as fewer people are learning the craft. Despite this, Roberto remains dedicated to keeping the tradition alive, ensuring that the legacy of the Zapatero lives on through his hands.
