What an absolute joy it is to photograph weddings as a job. 2025 had some of my absolute favourite weddings of my 16 years to date, introduced me to some new venues, allowed me work with amazing people and left me still wanting more at the end of the year. I’ve always said the day I start to feel I’m not enjoying this job is the day I stop doing it. That day is a long long way away yet. Thank you to absolutely everyone who helps make this job the absolute joy that is, be that my couples, their families and friends, my fellow suppliers, and perhaps most of all my fellow photographer friends. I love that we all support each other, push each other to get better and better, and do it for all the right reasons. Here’s to another amazing year of this wonderful job. #irishwedding #documentaryweddingphotography #weddingphotography #weddingphotographer #creativeweddingphotography by @ronanpalliser
My bio on here says “creator of A Shot In The Dark”. That may sound a bit arrogant, perhaps, and it also may not be immediately clear what exactly A Shot In The Dark is. Well here are 20 of my favourites from over 300 that I’ve shot to date. And here are five things you need to know about them: 💍 they are a photo of you and your new spouse in the environs of your venue, designed to showcase the venue as much as the couple. 🕣 they’re usually captured in 5 minutes between dinner and dancing. 💫 no two shots are the same. Even if I’m at the same venue as before, I want to get each couple an image that is absolutely unique to them. ❤️ I adore creating them - that process can take anything up to an hour while you enjoy your meal with your guests. 🦄 no other photographer that I know shoots night portraits like this in the way that I do. If you’re getting married and you want A Shot In The Dark, you’re in the right place for one and my DMs are open! #ashotinthedark #creativephotography #weddingphotography #irishwedding #nightportrai by @ronanpalliser
When the wedding party, the venue and the wedding day are all perfect to do a Vanity Fair portrait using my favourite light saber… Huge thanks to @edithousedublin for the BTS footage!! by @ronanpalliser
Dipping into the archives to wish Happy Anniversary to Fiona & Kevin, and to look back on their lovely day at @tulfarrishotelandgolfresort this day in 2023! Here are 20 frames in no particular order! by @ronanpalliser
I spent time over the last week reviewing my entire archive to refresh my portfolio for a new look website that is under development. Narrowing down photos to a small selection is not a strong suit of mine, but even when I forced myself to try to really do that, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to see photos from 2016, 2017 and 2018 still sitting happily alongside my more recent work in the portfolio. I switched from Nikon to Fuji back in 2016 and since then I’ve really found a consistency in my work (and my edit) that I’m very proud of. While many in this industry get pulled into trends, and enjoy changing what they shoot, how they shoot, and how they edit, I’ve never been one for that. Maybe it’s boring, maybe it’s the saying about old dogs and new tricks, but I like to think it’s due to trusting my instincts on what I like to shoot and what my clients like me to shoot. These photos are all from that 2016-2018 period but I could happily sell myself to any couple for 2026-2028 weddings with them. Timeless is a word that gets thrown around a lot in wedding photography - if that means photos that don’t age over 10 years, then maybe these are that. But, as someone who has always been about true colour real life photography, I think it’s simply because that type of photography never goes out of fashion. It might not dominate your feed these days as you scroll, but I am absolutely sure that these photos are even more special to the couples I shot them for now than they were when I first took them 8, 9, 10 years ago. That beats any trend in my book. 2016: Photos 5, 20 2017: Photos 1, 3, 6, 7, 16, 17, 18, 19 2018: Photos 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 by @ronanpalliser
The clocks going back is your sign to book a photographer who is not afraid of the dark. DMs are open! by @ronanpalliser
I got to shoot A Shot In The Dark number 300 last weekend. You can see that at the end of the carousel before this one. But seeing as this dip into the archives worked well the first time, I thought I’d share another 20 personal favourites from the 300 taken so far. One of my favourite things at a wedding is not just when the couple are excited to see what A Shot In The Dark they’re going to be taking, but when family or even friends ask me about it early in the day. It is very often something that lots of people are looking forward to, and for an idea that formed in my head as a way to keep busy over dinner at weddings, it kind of blows my mind how much of a *thing* it’s become for my couples and for their families and friends. Anyway, here are 20 more… 1. Suzanne & Paul at @castleknockhotel 2. Aisling & Kevin at @ballybeghouse 3. Denis & Peter at @actonshotelkinsale 4. Leanne & Mark at @ballymagarveyvillage 5. Fiona & Gary at @hotelgarryvoe 6. Eva & Stephen at @barberstowncastlehotel 7. Lauren & Tim at @thehardimangalway 8. Ciara & Killian at @horetownhouse 9. Shauna & Hannah at @ballygarryestate 10. Louise & Ruaridh at @tinakilly_country_house 11. Aisling & James at @ferrycarrighotel 12. Isobel & Martin at @clonabreany 13. Kate & Stephen at @kilshanehouse 14. Tessa & Denis at @inchydoneylodgeandspa 15. Rebecca & Jordan at @theshelbournedublin 16. Fiona & Kevin at @tulfarrishotelandgolfresort 17. Caoimhe & Aldo at @themaryborough 18. Joan & Padraig at @dunmorehousehotel 19. Sarah & Gavin at @vaughanspubkilfenora 20. Gemma & Jamie at @connemaracoast_hotel by @ronanpalliser
Kim and Eoghan, quite literally, took @boynehillhouse by storm for their German-Irish wedding, where the storm in this case was Storm Boelo. I think it was, officially, the worst weather I’ve ever photographed in. To give you an idea of just how bad it was - as I left prep at Boyne Hill to drive to the church, a tree fell on the car in front of me (thankfully both occupants were unharmed even if the car itself was badly damaged). So yeah, it was windy and wet and wild. But none of that mattered for the wedding. We took shelter in the cosy spaces of Boyne Hill and when we aborted an attempt at a few outdoor couple photos at the dinner bell, I knew the house itself offered some cool spaces to get what we needed. But my brief, first and foremost, was to just document the day and the people - just as I like it. One of my favourite moments of the day was when one of the groom’s nephews found a microphone in a drawer, snuck off to the staircase, switched it on and realised it was broadcasting over the PA system to the entire Manor House. Cue a little impromptu speech 😂. Photo number 6 captures his delight at realising the microphone worked! No photos outside (and the storm blowing over two of my lightstands) meant I had to think outside the box for A Shot In The Dark too - check out the last image for how i solved that problem. There was a great team on this one - a big thanks to Sara, Elaine and all at Boyne Hill who were absolutely fantastic for the whole day. And a big thanks also to @leahoneillhair on hair, @byaislinghickey on makeup, Fr. O’Connor who celebrated the mass, @thehoneyvoomduo on ceremony music and @djandsax.ie who kept the half Irish half German dancefloor hopping! by @ronanpalliser
On Saturday I will take A Shot In The Dark number 300. Little did I think l, when I first took a flash off my camera - at my fourth ever wedding back in 2010 - to take a night time portrait of the couple at their venue, that 16 years later that concept for one single image, creatively driven and visually distinct from every other photo I take at a wedding, would become such a driving force of my business. When I look through the 299 photos taken, starting with that first one, I see my growth as a photographer. It’s impossible to pick favourites, and I’m sure were I to do so tomorrow I’d have a different set of favourites than today, but here are twenty that definitely make the shortlist. All lit with @magnetmod modifiers and @godox_global flashes. No AI! 1. Eoin & Alan at @waterford_castle 2. Olga & Johnny at home for their festival on a farm wedding 3. Nicola & Tom at @knightsbrookhotel 4. Ciara & Kevin at @fernhillhotelandestate 5. Eleanor & David at @cahernanehotel 6. Keith & Keith at @langtonskilkenny 7. Fiona & Liam at @themillhouseslane 8. Ami & Sinead at @tulfarrishotelandgolfresort 9. Orla & Timmy at @lougheskecastle 10. Oonagh & Ronan at @segravebarns 11. Aine & Senan at @thehardimangalway 12. Sarah & Ryan at @kilshanehouse 13. Laura & Darren at @knightsbrookhotel 14. Rachel & Richie at @abbey_hotel_roscommon 15. Lea & Thomas at @hotelgarryvoe 16. Aoife & David at @castleleslie 17. Sophie & Kevin at @castlemartyrresort 18. Miriam & John at @vaughanspubkilfenora 19. Natalie & Kieran at @thebrehonhotel 20. Emma & Michael at @tankardstownhouse by @ronanpalliser
It kinda tells you all you need to know about Jamie & Will’s wedding celebration when I say that really, apart from the venue - the fantastic @segravebarns - the only suppliers for the day were me, the singer for the drinks reception, and the band. This was quite simply a party that they wanted photographed. They had been married legally back in March in a small registry office ceremony that my good pal @katiekavphoto photographed, and when she was unavailable for their party date in October she felt that I’d be the ideal photographer for what they had in mind, and sent them my way. Chatting to the lads, learning about their plans for the day, and knowing what Segrave has to offer, I tended to agree! And so I found myself in Segrave for about 10 hours on a sunny October day with Jamie, Will, their families and friends (including their close friend Usha who was celebrant for a short ceremony in front of all of their guests) for what was essentially Jamie & Will’s big day of fun! It started quiet, ended loud, and I enjoyed every single minute of it. Here are just a selection from that epic celebration! Sarah & Phillip rocked @kilshanehouse as they gathered their family and friends for a lovely celebration of their marriage! With a beautiful ceremony in the conservatory (testing my problem-solving skills to get a group photo!), Kilshane was a natural choice, with Sarah’s dad having grown up in the area, and much of the wedding coming from Cork and Dublin to meet in the middle. From prep (featuring a splinter in Sarah’s hand) all the way through to that lively dancefloor (with music by @electriccircusweddings), this was a fantastic day to photograph. Granny was unable to attend but dialled in on a video call during the ceremony and Sarah phoned her afterwards too. And of course there was A Shot In The Dark to be captured just before dancing!
