Join us for the finissage of Roberto Barbosa’s solo exhibition Underground on Saturday, 17 October, 4–7 pm.

Extending across the gallery and the building’s historic air-raid shelter, »Underground« brings together works exploring embodiment, memory and transformation. Personal encounters meet cultural imagery, while the sacred and the intimate exist in close proximity. Through video, painting, drawing and sculptural miniatures, Barbosa examines how identities emerge between body and memory, desire and attribution.

Barbosa works across video, performance, photography, drawing, sculptural miniatures and architectural models, constructing spatial scenarios between reality and fiction, memory and projection. His own body becomes a medium through which architecture, identity and belonging are continually renegotiated.

✨ Comenzamos a compartir el trabajo de lxs artistas seleccionadxs de Parajes, un programa impulsado por la Dirección de Cultura Guadalajara que busca reconocer, visibilizar y acompañar la producción artística emergente a nivel local y nacional.

🧭 Tras una convocatoria pública, el programa conformó tres duplas de artistas que desarrollarán exposiciones dúo a lo largo de 2025, con el acompañamiento curatorial del museo. Cada muestra reunirá a unx artista de Guadalajara con unx de otra ciudad, propiciando cruces entre contextos, prácticas y lenguajes artísticos.

🔍 Iniciamos con Roberto Barbosa, arquitecto y artista originario de Guadalajara, radicado actualmente en Frankfurt, Alemania. Su práctica artística gira en torno a la creación de portales construidos a partir de miniaturas y modelos arquitectónicos, que emplea como escenarios para breves vídeo-performances en los que incorpora su propio cuerpo. Estos mundos ficcionales operan como espacios de resistencia que cuestionan las normativas sociales e imaginan otras posibilidades cuir. El cuerpo, como eje central de su trabajo, también atraviesa sus series de dibujo y fotografía, donde se presenta como una extensión de la naturaleza y una vía para explorar la autorrepresentación, la posibilidad y la identidad.

Su obra se ha presentado recientemente en 3AP Gallery, Düsseldorf (2025); BRIC, Brooklyn (2024); Flat Earth Film Festival, Seyðisfjörður, Islandia (2024); y Temporary Gallery – Centre for Contemporary Art, Colonia (2023). Ha participado en residencias artísticas como la NARS Foundation en Brooklyn (2024) y Heima en Seyðisfjörður, Islandia (2023).

Barbosa cursó la Maestría en Bellas Artes en la Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule de Frankfurt del Meno (2019). Es licenciado en Arquitectura por la Universidad de Guadalajara (2015) y realizó un programa de intercambio en la Universidad de Málaga, España (2014).

Galerie 3AP is pleased to announce that Roberto Barbosa has been awarded First Prize in the Multiple Figure category at the Tom of Finland Emerging Artist Competition. @roobbr

We warmly congratulate Roberto Barbosa on this significant recognition and look forward to the continued development of his practice.

The Cruz de Lilies series explores the formal language of the lily while reconfiguring its established symbolic associations. Long connected with notions of purity, fragility, and femininity, the motif is transformed through sculptural qualities culturally coded as masculine. Addressing contemporary conversations around masculinity, body politics, and trans identity, the works question fixed conceptions of gender and propose identity as fluid, relational, and continually negotiated through social and cultural structures. Oscillating between sacred iconography and corporeal presence, the series offers a nuanced reflection on identity as an evolving condition rather than a fixed category.

Underground brings together several distinct bodies of work, including a newly developed series of five paintings that explores the relationship between botanical forms and the human body. In "Anal_isis Floral", Roberto Barbosa develops the connection between plant and body into a distinctly corporeal visual language.

While breasts and female and male sexual anatomy have been repeatedly depicted, idealised and eroticised throughout art history, the anus has remained largely absent, concealed, or displaced into other visual forms. Barbosa shifts this boundary by connecting the possible representation of the anus with the form of the flower’s corolla. "Anal_isis Flora" thus becomes an exploration of the body, desire, and the cultural taboos that determine what can be seen and what remains hidden.

With »Underground«, Barbosa’s work also enters into direct dialogue with the architecture of Galerie 3AP. The historic air-raid shelter becomes an integral part of the exhibition’s spatial narrative. Nepantlera (2023), created during a residency in Iceland, provides another point of departure. The title refers to nepantla, a Nahuatl term describing a state of being in between worlds, states of consciousness and forms of belonging. The jellyfish appears as a spiritual guide, his Nagual: a shapeless, permeable body that resists fixed definition.

Roberto Barbosa’s collection of line drawings examines notions of desire, perceptions of space and control. Through the intricate convergence of bodies and architectural forms, the drawings render landscapes of intimacy, anxiety and vulnerability.

Extending beyond material and form, Barbosa’s practice explores the ways in which power and identity are constructed, inhabited and transformed.
