Before his artist talk, Julián Kreimer set a small brown valise on the table and opened it. Inside, folders held drawings on paper, each made in response to a photographic slide from his parents’ archive. The valise was not part of the exhibition; it was the working material behind it, a private archive he had been drawing through for years. Encountering it set the terms for the room next door: Yuyo is what happens when that interior is opened out.

The title is Kreimer’s lifelong family nickname: yuyo, regional Spanish, by way of Quechua, for “a weed.” The word is more useful than it sounds at first. In much of Latin America, yuyo covers a wide range — from the herbs used in mate and folk remedies to whatever sprouts in the cracks: untended, often dismissed, sometimes medicinal. It is a fitting frame for work that grows out of displacement and persists in modest materials: a family transplanted from Argentina in the 1970s, an archive kept in folders and slides, pen on a father’s old letterhead, colored pencil on paper. Like the plant it names, the work is unshowy, durable, spreading, in transformation.

Join us at The Gallery on April 27 for a conversation with faculty member Kerry Downey and exhibiting artist Julián Kreimer.

Julián Kreimer is the chair of the MFA Program at Purchase College SUNY.  Solo shows have been at the Atkinson Gallery at SBCC (CA), TSA LA (CA), Lux Art Institute (CA), and Weeknights Gallery (Brooklyn). His work has also been exhibited at 1969 Gallery, the 2021 Armory show, Super Dutchess Gallery, Kunst in Fluc (Vienna) and Morgan Lehman Gallery. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, Hyperallergic, Artcritical, and Two Coats of Paint. He is a repeat fellow at Yaddo and MacDowell and received a 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Painting Fellowship. He has been a frequent contributor to Art in America, and has written for Paper Monument, Hyperallergic, and Modern Painters , as well as numerous museum catalogs.

Kerry Downey (b. Ft. Lauderdale, 1979) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Kingston, New York. Downey’s practice explores embodied forms of resistance and transformation. Recent solo shows were at Underdonk in Brooklyn, NY and Bureau of General Services / Queer Division (New York, NY). They have also exhibited at the Bard CCS / Hessel Museum (Annandale, NY); Queens Museum (Flushing, NY); Leslie Lohman Museum of Art (New York, NY); Knockdown Center (Maspeth, NY); Kate Werble (New York, NY); and University of Arizona Museum of Art (Tucson, AZ). Downey is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and New York State Council on the Arts Grant. Their work has been in Artforum and The Washington Post. Downey holds a BA from Bard College and an MFA from Hunter College. Downey is currently guest faculty in Visual and Studio Arts at Sarah Lawrence College.
