For a long time, I thought the best way to build confidence was to constantly test myself against the best.

Looking back, I realize a lot of that came from insecurity. I felt like I always had something to prove, even in training.

It wasn't until much later in my career that I started to understand the difference between testing your confidence and actually building it.

In my latest Substack article, I share some personal experiences training with Georges St-Pierre and John Danaher, and how they shaped the way I look at confidence, improvement, and finding your own identity.

These are lessons I wish I'd understood much earlier, and I believe they apply to a lot more than just fighting.

The full article is available now for paid subscribers on my Substack.

The cage isn't just a boundary. It's a weapon when you know how to use it.
Whether you're attacking, defending, or fighting to get back to your feet, understanding cage wrestling can change your entire MMA game.

Just finished putting together a new article on my Substack about what my training schedule actually looked like during my UFC days.

It was pretty interesting going back through my old routines and remembering how I used to prepare for fights. A lot of hard work went into those years, and looking back now, there are definitely things I see differently.

I enjoyed putting this one together, and hopefully some of you, especially the younger fighters out there, can take something away from it.

It’s up on my Substack now if you want to give it a read. Link in bio by @rorymacdonaldmma

One of the stranger stories from my UFC career was how I ended up walking out to music I never actually chose.

It’s kind of funny looking back on it now, especially considering how long it went on.

I wrote a little story about how a random UFC fan ended up influencing my walkout music for years without me even realizing it.

It’s up on my Substack now and it’s free to read if you’re interested.

I’m excited to share something new I’ve been working on!

I’ve started writing on Substack, where I’ll be sharing stories and experiences from my MMA career that I’ve never really talked about.

I’ll also be sharing lessons I’ve learned along the way, insights into training, and my thoughts on life after fighting, fatherhood, faith, and personal growth.

I’ve already published several articles, both free and paid, with plenty more to come.

I appreciate everyone who’s followed and supported me over the years. Hope you’ll join me for this next chapter!

Check it out through the link in my bio.

This is Rory demonstrating a sweep from the bottom position during our last Modern Warrior Bootcamp.

It starts with the kick-over to create movement and force the opponent to base out. From there, he gets the underhook and the hook, rolls underneath the hips and enters X-guard.

Once you get there, you have options depending on the reaction: kneebar, ankle lock, take the back, or control the wrist and finish the sweep.

What I like about this sequence is that you’re not trying to overpower the guy on top. You’re getting underneath his center of gravity, controlling the hips and using position and leverage to move him.

That makes it especially useful for smaller grapplers dealing with bigger, stronger opponents.

Create the reaction. Get under the hips. Then take what they give you. by @rorymacdonaldmma
