Recognizing February as Black History Month is common knowledge, but few grasp the pivotal role that myself and my community support played in its establishment.

I am thrilled to share insights into the origins of Black History Month in Canada, particularly the foundational efforts led by Kay Livingston and the Canadian Negro Women’s Club. The first informal celebration took place in 1950, and it wasn’t until the formation of the Ontario Black History Society in 1978 that it gained formal recognition.

I, Rosemary Sadlier, took the initiative to secure and commemorate this important month, shaping it into what it is today. Your support is crucial, and I invite you to click the link in my bio to pre-order my book, which delves deeper into the rich history of Black Canadians and the significance of Black History Month in our country via the link in my bio.

WHY ME FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2027?

For over 30 years, I have worked to change how Black history is understood, taught and recognized.

I led advocacy for Canada's national recognition of Black History Month and championed August 1 as Emancipation Day at municipal, provincial and national levels.

As the author of eight books, including the bestselling #TheKidsBookofBlackHistory in Canada, I bring history, advocacy, leadership and lived experience to audiences.

What do I offer?

More than historical knowledge—the experience of turning advocacy into lasting change.

Tell the history. Connect it to today. Inspire the future.

Now booking a limited number of Black History Month 2027 keynotes, fireside chats and customized presentations.

Is there ever enough gravy?😊🍁🍂 by @rosemarysadlier

His story is his resurrection song— from Black American destroyer in the ring who persevered—through talent and will against all odds—to become a civil rights icon known around the world.

Back in the 60s, Rubin was a contender for the middleweight crown.

Our story is not only how he survived prison— but how he fought to make the wrongly convicted a mainstream issue— and battled to outlaw the death penalty.

And it’s the story of John, the athletic kid who lost his life dream— to play for the New York Jets.

But it’s also about their remarkable resilience over decades and their ultimate victory— the saga of two lifers— one famous, one not— who beat the odds, won freedom and have a message for all of us:😊 by @rosemarysadlier

Delighted to celebrate the publication of Leading Change From the Inside: The Power of Black Employee Resource Groups in Canadian Workplaces by Jide Adeoye and David Cooper.

This is an important book about what happens when workplace inclusion moves beyond policies and good intentions and into meaningful action.

Through the story of the Afro-Canadian Development and Empowerment (ADE) group at goeasy Ltd., the book explores mentorship, leadership, professional development, belonging and the power of Black employees to help create change from within their organizations.

I was honoured to contribute the Foreword and to share my perspectives and experience through the book's work. I was also pleased to present on this important subject.

And I am especially happy to see the book already achieving bestseller status!

Congratulations to Jide, David, the ADE team and everyone at goeasy who helped bring this important work to life.

I encourage organizations, leaders and ERG members to read it — and, most importantly, to put its lessons into practice.

I am still reflecting on an extraordinary evening.

I was deeply honoured to be celebrated at a special dinner hosted by Toronto Metropolitan University, surrounded by faculty, colleagues, friends and invited guests who have been part of my journey in different ways.

It was an evening filled with warmth, generosity, laughter, wonderful memories and, above all, an appreciation that touched me deeply.

Although I was not a student at TMU, the university has been an important part of my journey for many years. I have had the privilege of working with and participating in initiatives at TMU connected to Black History, Black Remembrance Day, August 1st as Emancipation Day, the Mandela Legacy, the launch of the Black Scholarship Institute and other progressive initiatives. To now be honoured by the university in this very special way was both unexpected and profoundly meaningful.

What made the evening particularly special was the recognition not simply of accomplishments, but of a journey—a journey rooted in history, justice, education, advocacy and a belief that we have a responsibility to make the path better for those who follow.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who organized the evening, to those who attended, to those who shared such generous words, and to the many people whose friendship and partnership have enriched my work over the years.

I left the evening feeling enormously grateful—and also energized.

There is still so much to do. And I very much look forward to what comes next, and to the possibility of continuing to build, collaborate and create meaningful change together.

Thank you, TMU, for an unforgettable evening. ❤️

August 7th was my mother's birthday. She was a tremendous woman who left an indelible impression on me and my children. This photo is from the last 'big' birthday party she had to mark a major milestone. Proof that coffee is important to one's life and joy!
