When we were finishing up writing and recording the Rotterdam album, my friend Craig, who passed away on this day six years ago, was on my mind quite a bit. We had an interesting and dynamic friendship, as we both drummed for the same band, swapping the seat behind the drum kit over many years, with tours spanning all over four continents. We continued to be very close until the end of his life.

This was my first recorded piece since his untimely passing, and I kept thinking about how tremendously we miss him and how the awful pain of him no longer being here can still hurt just as much today. I still feel his presence throughout my life and through our shared love of music.

I thought about how he would feel about all of the songs, his approach to the drum parts, chasing tones, and everything in between. I wanted to honor him in some way on the album, in the best way I could. When we talked about ending the album with an instrumental song, I kept thinking about Craig’s drum performance and the melody on Defilers’ title track, “Nematocera.”

In our circle of friends, we refer to this song and his performance as his Magnum Opus. The drum solo at the end is so ridiculous, phenomenal and so very Craig-like that many of us, myself included, would never be able to come close to replicating his level of skill on this track.

We titled the final song on our album “Who Owns the Moon”—Craig’s old email address, which we always joked about and discussed, and which he referenced in his own musical projects and lyrics over the years.

It’s not nearly as good as what he did, but I’m proud that I was able to honor my brother with this song, its title, and its feel. He’s a big reason why I still play, and one day, I’ll master some more Craig drum fills.

I encourage you to create art, be kind to everyone, laugh and make others laugh, listen to music, and keep moving—all qualities my friend embodied and that I carry with me every day. Endlessly connected.

“Who Owns the Moon” is available for free on our Bandcamp and streaming. Defilers’ “Nematocera” is also available on all streaming platforms.

For Craig.

JUST ANNOUNCED!! 11/29 at @theestorkcluboakland :::

✩ HIPPIE DEATH CULT @hippiedeathcultband

Portland’s Hippie Death Cult has evolved into a true powerhouse in the world of rock. Driven by an unwavering commitment to their craft and a refusal to be categorized, the band continues to push the boundaries of their sound. With a new chapter unfolding through their partnership with Metal Blade Records, they remain a vital, uncompromising force poised to leave an indelible mark on the heavy music scene.

✩ ROTTERDAM @rotterdamband

Rotterdam is a three-piece doom / alternative metal / stoner outfit from the Bay Area, CA, formed in 2020 by lifelong friends Brenden Massa (vocals, bass) and Wyatt Slanec (guitar). The lineup was later rounded out by drummer Ian Poole, formally of the viral Deathcore band Defiler. After pouring the highs and lows of the past few years into their music, the band headed to Earthtone Studios in Sacramento, CA, to record with engineer Patrick Hill (King Woman, Oromet). The result — Falling In Vertigo — was released in March 2026. Rotterdam has played select shows up and down the California coast alongside acts like Bongzilla, Hippie Death Cult, Year Of The Cobra, and Hasthronaut, with more dates planned
