A civilisation begins not with an empire, but with a figure—then another, and another. A figure is each of us: fragile, finite, yet choosing to stand. To stand is to be aware—of one’s own strength, direction, and place within a shared world. Civilisation grows from those who decide to be present, who hold the world together not through command, but through attention.
Here, at RUCI, we look to these figures—singular yet connected—whose gestures, gathered, form a rhythm of coexistence. Civilisation here is not built by rulers or celebrated in monuments. It emerges through the persistence of individuals who keep working, who stay with the task of living together. Artists, workers, weavers, listeners—each one holds a thread in the weave of the common. Every figure matters—not as a symbol, but as a living presence.
Figures, dedications, and civilisations invites us to see history not as inheritance but as rehearsal. Civilisation, in this sense, is not a condition to preserve but a rhythm to keep alive. It is what happens when we stay in the work—together, aware yet uncertain—figuring things out, again and again, in the long afterlife of the flood.

Sesudah banjir itu (When the flood is over) begins with a question of conservation: How to care for the vast cycle of dioramas at Museum Sejarah Nasional (National History Museum), located beneath Monumen Nasional? Produced under the supervision of sculptor Edhi Sunarso during the political upheavals of the mid-1960s–1970s, these dioramas narrate the formation of the Indonesian nation-state.
In 2007, a collective of historians proposed revisiting and revising the dioramas, but nothing came of this proposal. In 2018, the Jakarta City Government selected an architect through an open call to renew the museum as an “immersive experience.” The chosen design would have completely erased the dioramas. This idea was shelved, but this decision could be revoked at any time—a latent threat hanging over the museum. By 2025, the new regime has made clear its intent to rewrite national history. In this climate, Sesudah banjir itu takes shape as a pre-emptive, citizen-led act of conservation: Refusing erasure by remaking—rather than replacing—the figures on our own terms.
Sesudah banjir itu is initiated and carried out by a group of civilians working through a principle of conviviality. Conservation here is recognized as a long-term, perhaps endless, process: Copying the diorama figures by hand, one at a time, to slowly generate sets to be stored in Edhi Sunarso’s former studio, where they were first made. The first set is painted and circulated in exhibitions as a provocation, a campaign, and a call. The second set—still in their molds, left unpainted—is held in perpetuity at Griya Seni Hj. Kustiyah Edhi Sunarso, awaiting the moment they may need to stand in the place of the originals.

EXHIBITION OPENS UNTIL 12 December 2025
Tue-Sun, noon – 7pm (closed on Monday)
We figure that dedication is an intriguing quality. Here, at RUBANAH, we turn to what lies beneath form—the patient attention that allows things to exist. Can we pause to honour the quiet labour behind every act of making? The hands that touch clay, the ears that listen, the eyes that adjust to darkness, the breath that steadies repetition. Here, devotion replaces monumentality. Dedication is not about grand gestures, but about returning—again and again—to the work.
Dedication is therefore about practice as persistence: the eagerness to learn, to unlearn, to begin again. The refusal to stop at mastery. The willingness to stay with what is unfinished. In this devotion to process, making becomes a form of prayer—wordless yet attentive, humble yet enduring.
In the underground quiet of RUBANAH, these devotions find resonance. Not as spectacle, but as pulse: small, continuous, alive. To dedicate, here, is to keep working—not toward perfection, but toward connection.
