Happy National Cartoonists Day!
Today we celebrate legendary cartoonists like Rube Goldberg. Did you know he drew over 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime?!

He was a founding member and first president of the National Cartoonists Society, which hosts the annual Reuben Award, honoring the top cartoonist of the year and named after Goldberg, who won the award in 1967.

Rube Goldberg is best known for drawing Rube Goldberg Machines. His whimsical, over-the-top inventions that perform simple tasks in the most complicated ways imaginable. His legacy lives on in creativity, humor, and a love for the absurd.

Rube Goldberg received many honors in his lifetime, including a Pulitzer Prize for political cartooning in 1948, the National Cartoonists Society’s Gold T-Square Award in 1955, and the Banshees’ Silver Lady Award in 1959. He is the inspiration for international competitions known as Rube Goldberg Machine Contests, which challenge participants to create a complicated machine to perform a simple task.

Here’s to the artists who make us laugh, think, and see the world through a more animated lens!

What’s a Rube Goldberg Machine?

Let’s imagine this.

You want to turn off a light.
Easy, right?

But instead of using your finger…

a ball rolls,
hits a book,
the book pulls a string,
the string drops a spoon,
and somehow…

Click!
The light turns off.

That’s a Rube Goldberg Machine.

It does a very simple task in the funniest, most creative, and wonderfully complicated way.

But did you know?
It didn’t start as a real machine.

It started as a cartoon.

More than 100 years ago, Rube Goldberg drew silly machines that solved everyday problems in the most unexpected ways.

Then students at Purdue University thought,
“Can we actually build this?”

So they did.

A cartoon became a machine.
A machine became a challenge.
And the challenge became a competition.

Today, the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest continues every year with a new mission.

And in the AI era, this kind of learning matters even more.

Because building one teaches us to imagine, test, fail, fix, connect, and try again.

It feels like play.
But inside the play, we learn science, engineering, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Fun fact:
Rube Goldberg himself never actually built the machines he drew.

He imagined them.
The world built them.

Now it’s our turn.
