The goal is always to jump so high you’re out of the frame @ilancumberbirch 🐐 by @ryan.sportsci
Always chasing methods of promoting hip extension, I think athletes of all sports can benefit from actively chasing hip extension. Saw this one from @coach_jorditaylor ages ago, he can explain where it came from if you’re curious. Initially hits really well on trunk stiffness, I’ve found it to be pretty nice from a hip extension perspective when cued correctly. Focusing on the highest reach overhead has been the cue that’s worked well. I think progressing to be further from the wall might be a suitable progression for athletes that are capable of it, although from my pedestrian demo, I’m good staying real close to the wall 😅 by @ryan.sportsci
Cluster sets remain as one of my most used loading schemes as they can get quality work done at higher volumes if prescribed correct but also, they’re quick. Sometimes that’s the constraint, purely time. Anyways, here’s how I set up @gymaware to measure my clusters. 225lbs, 3x3 (15 seconds between sets) The @irwinfitnesssystems racks at @yardathletics_ are just awesome, and you can mount the unit directly above the bar! by @ryan.sportsci
So much focus on testing can sometimes make you forget what’s actually important - Training! This is a revamped version of what I shared 2 years ago with some refinements. A selection of tests available on ForceDecks with some of my go to exercises selections to train towards performing in that specific tests. There are a handful of exercises for every test that aren’t included mainly due to space, do you have any go-to’s that aren’t included here? In summary, don’t forget to actually train once you have some data to inform you! 💪 by @ryan.sportsci
Part 7 of the understanding jump testing series is live on Substack - only one more of these to go next week to round off the series! This time looking at changes in data vs actual changes in performance and how we can have confidence in those changes! The quote on the second image I feel sums me up as a practitioner. Decision trees, frameworks and continuums are all great to give you a road map, but sometimes, you just need to push the athlete to perform. Knowing when to push is the valuable piece though. sportsci.substack.com if you’re interested in following along! by @ryan.sportsci
Not all strength tests assess strength under the same mechanical conditions. Consider the demands of a rugby scrum. Players must generate and resist maximal forces while maintaining their position under significant compressive loading. Now consider two common assessments of maximal isometric strength. Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (IMTP) - The athlete pulls upward against a fixed bar (of course with hand wraps, before the S&C trolls come knocking) while pushing feet into the floor , producing force through the lower limbs and trunk while loading the upper body through the arms. Isometric Squat The athlete pushes against a fixed bar positioned across the upper back, introducing an external compressive loading condition. Both assessments provide valuable information about maximal isometric force production. For rugby forwards, particularly when considering the compressive demands of scrummaging, an isometric squat may offer greater mechanical similarity in certain respects. Does that automatically make it a predictor of scrum performance? No. Of course you have to acknowledge the horizontal nature of a scrum vs the “verticalness” of the iso squat, but I think the key point here is that we’re not trying to replicate a scrum, we are trying to provide similar tasks that may be related to the scrum. Should we select strength assessments based solely on their reliability and popularity, or should we also consider the mechanical demands of the task we’re trying to assess. I’ve seen a shift in the last couple of years to a belt squat as it reduces compression, which I’m in favour of generally - although for a position like a forward in rugby, should we be treating exposures to high force, compressive loads as something to avoid or something to train for? Just one of many thoughts I devote more energy to than I probably need to…😅 by @ryan.sportsci
Have been down a rabbit hole on all things neck strengthening recently. Mainly down to crossing paths with some leaders in the space such as @gav_pratt It’s a timely topic to dive into as well, with the release yesterday of The Practitioner’s Guide to The Neck from @vald_performance Using the @theironneck harness here, it’s a level above the other harnesses I’ve had access to in the past and feels really safe doing exercises like this 🙏 by @ryan.sportsci
After some heavy travel by plane this week, sometimes the session you had planned just won’t work out. I used velocity targets to find a weight that worked, I modified the range of motion because I was feeling a bit tight and used a combination of @bridgeathletic and @gymaware to drive intent regardless throughout my session. Modifications have never been so easy! by @ryan.sportsci
All human movement has some variation. Reps within a test will differ and results will vary between sessions. A higher jump doesn’t automatically mean improvement. A lower jump doesn’t automatically mean decline. It’s really important to understand how much variation is normal, so we can recognise when something has actually changed. It’s also important to highlight that not all athletes will have the same levels of variation for specific metrics. by @ryan.sportsci
Test all the positions, understand which positions are stronger, and if there are any specific positions that have asymmetries outside the norm. Then decide which is your go to for monitoring on a more regular basis. by @ryan.sportsci
Brilliant few days in London for VALDCONX 🇬🇧 So good to connect (and re-connect!) with so many fantastic practitioners across sport science, strength & conditioning and rehabilitation. Plenty of insightful presentations, valuable conversations and opportunities to share ideas 💡 by @ryan.sportsci
Part 6 of the understanding jump testing series dropped today. Check it out on Substack! sportsci.substack.com by @ryan.sportsci
