POSTS STORIES REELS

Friends, it’s finally time. After several years in the works, my memoir is complete! Today, I’m excited to share the cover for WEIRD ERA: How Pitchfork Changed Music Forever, dropping December 1, 2026 via Farrar, Straus and Giroux. (@fsgbooks)

WEIRD ERA documents the rise of online music journalism, recounting how the medium led a generation of listeners to the music they loved (and hated!). It’s also the story of my own personal journey: from Pitchfork’s scrappy origins in my suburban Minneapolis bedroom, through its transformative years in Chicago, to its arrival as a global force in New York. Along the way, WEIRD ERA revisits indie rock’s ascent from underground subculture to mainstream phenomenon, the scenes and sounds we covered, and the inside story of our pivotal acquisition by Condé Nast.

Writing this book was one of the greatest creative challenges of my life. For 20+ years, my work was about analyzing the art and ambitions of others, so it was rewarding (if surreal!) to bring that same critical lens to my own story. I did a lot of digital archaeology to get it right, mining old hard drives to cross-reference decades of emails, AIM chats, internal message board threads, and audio tapes from the Pitchfork archives. The result is as much a nostalgia trip as a look behind the curtain at how Pitchfork became the force it did. I’m excited to share it with the world.

WEIRD ERA is available for pre-order now at the link in my bio, where you’ll also find my new website and a link to join me on Substack at ethernet.fm for what’s next. To everyone who helped make Pitchfork everything it became, thank you for the passion you poured into its pages and events. And to everyone who followed along, thanks for reading— then and now.

PS — I’m retiring my former screenname, Ryanpitchfork. My handle across all sites and socials is now ryanschreiberfm. (Instagram and Threads will update soon.)

Big news on the artist advisory front today: LA artist @allieteilz is dropping her debut album on October 9! The first two singles (“17” and “Pretty Please”) are out now under her artist name TEILZ. 💕

Allie has been working on this project for almost two years, and I’m so excited for y’all to listen and hear this absolute BANGER electropop LP. I’m pleased to say it is a total f*cking blast, vicious and real.

RIYL: 80s post-punk a la The Slits, ESG, and Lizzy Mercier Descloux; electroclash icons Peaches, Le Tigre, and Soulwax; or neo new-ravers like Slayyyter, Gelli Haha, and Avalon Emerson. Or, more generally: punk and pop girlies with TEETH. 😈

The album is delightfully titled **come to mommy** and is produced by the god OG @nicksylvester , aka studio genius behind the debuts of @kraejiyaeji , @channeltres , and @itsthedare

Lots of dope singles & music videos dropping between now and October, all featuring sick visuals by @neilkrug

Stay tuned or — better yet — hit me up if you want to hear the album. The final masters just came in 😉 by @ryanpitchfork

This past week marked my 10th year at @primavera_sound and I’m glad to report that the vibes remain unparalleled. Though it’s been ages since Pitchfork co-curated its own stage there, the Primavera team still feels like family, inviting us back again and again, always treating us like brothers.

Of all the festivals I’ve been to over the years, Primavera is the one that most shared Pitchfork’s values, equally championing the vanguard and the old guard, putting on the brightest emerging bands while securing certified legends no one else could get. It’s also responsible for some of the most transcendental music experiences I’ve had.

Imo, it’s the last great music festival of our gen still going hard as ever with no sign of slowing down. Shoutouts to the new crew at P4K for keeping it 💯 and BIG hugs to Pablo and Fra, @paucristoful and ALL the Primavera people for being the greatest in the game, point blank period!

After a decade of @thelotradio serving as a central hub of the NYC music community and thee greatest hang in north Brooklyn, I’m thrilled to join this kickass roster as part of their 2026 residencies.

My show starts January 28 at noon et. It’s called ETHERNET with Ryan Schreiber and streams live on the last Wednesday of every month. It’s all about deep discovery and unlocking the secret doors in the catalogs of artists we love. All vinyl + mp3 from my own collection — and the occasional SPECIAL GUEST.

I went to the New York Film Festival premiere of the new Springsteen biopic, ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere,’ and all I got was:

1) To interview Lucy Dacus, the National’s Matt Berninger, and the Walkmen’s Walter Martin about the impact of ‘Nebraska’ on their work and the entire DIY music culture;

2) A tour of NYC’s Power Station recording studios, where Bruce tried in vain to track ‘Nebraska’ with the E Street Band before deciding to just record ‘Born in the USA’ instead;

3) To play some ‘Nebraska’ tunes on the studio’s legendary piano, despite the absence of any piano featuring on the album;

4) A third-row seat for the film premiere plus a surprise performance by The Boss (TM) himself;

5) Jeremy Allen White’s two-hour Bruce impression, which filnds him neck-craning, whisper-grumbling, hunch-walking, collar-popping, and vocal-shredding with staggering doppelganger accuracy (all future karaoke nights are his for the taking);

6) Invited to the afterparty with all the filmstars and producers — but not Jon Landau or Bruce Springsteen, whose placards @jennpelly and I handily appropriated.

Thanks to @frankichan & @iheartcomix for enlisting me as host/inquisitor for the studio portion of the afternoon, introing me to cool kids like @saintvirgil.mp3 and @nicky.reardon, and feeding us all Katz’s pastrami for lunch.

Bonus props @20thcenturystudios #delivermefromnowhere by @ryanpitchfork

Honored to lead three nights of Q&As for the NYC premieres of Broken Social Scene’s new documentary, ‘It’s All Gonna Break,’ with Kevin Drew and director Stephen Chung at Nitehawk and IFC Center. Such an incredible document of the early ‘00s indie scene and how the band— and their breakout album ‘You Forgot It in People’— came together. Go see it! by @ryanpitchfork

Big thanks to Nick Doyle who invited me back to Paris to DJ the opening of ‘Business, Pleasure, Pressure, Release,’ his corporate-themed kink bar installation (!!) at Perrotin Gallery. Must recommend checking it out if you’re in town. It’ll be up through March 8. (Shoutout @maxwellturner for the video edit and all the great snaps!) by @ryanpitchfork

Today, we salute two amazing decades of the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago’s Union Park as it sadly comes to an end. My eternal gratitude to @reedmicj and the entire At Pluto crew, @chriskaskie @adamkrefman @swoosiehearse @puja_patel and everyone at @pitchfork who worked to create the lineups and corral coverage, @kentuckylink and @klfbiz3 for always getting the best press, the artists who graced us with years of unforgettable performances, the writers and contributors who turned it into an annual reunion/summit of music journalists, the attendees and guests who made it such a perfect vibe, and the entire Chicago music community who generously extended their talents and spirit to make it the very special thing it was. by @ryanpitchfork
