The biggest Mews from Salem Cat Museum— maybe ever 🙀😻🙀😻🙀😻 We’re moving to 159 Derby Street in Salem— opening January 2027 😻🎉😻🎉 We’ll still be open at 107 Boston Street until late December, but we couldn’t wait to tell you about our new bigger digs on the other side of town! 159 Derby is owned by Paul Nathan, a retired lawyer and current artist — The Paul Nathan Museum & Gallery has occupied the space in some form for the last decade. Paul’s art work might not be very catty but it will always have a place at 159 Derby — Salem Cat Museum is forever grateful to him and his daughter @katrinabrees for allowing the cat museum the incredible opportunity to use the space! We are also super grateful to our pal @brittandmars for introducing us to the Nathan family and putting this all in motion 🖤🖤 Our new location was also foretold by the great book: Penelope Kitten’s Epic Adventure (with cheese) by @marcyverymuch 🐈‍⬛🖤🖤 Thus, it had to be 😻😹
.
We’ll have lots more details about the move and closing/opening parties later, for now we just wanted to let the cat a bit more out of the bag 😻🎉 by @salemcatmuseum

It’s been a little while since we showed you around the gift shop at Salem Cat Museum— let’s fix that meow! From cat-shaped crystals to catnip cat toys to every-catty-thing in between—there’s a little something for every cat & cat lover here! The gift shop’s small footprint is packed with unique artist finds, hard-to-find imports & collectibles — you can rest assured you won’t find products that rip off artists or use generative AI in their fabrication. You can also shop the contents of Salem Cat Museum’s gift shop online if you can’t make it to Boston Street in Salem!

Please note (because we seem to get this question often) the cat museum is not currently looking for new gift shop artists. We have limited space and are already working with an overwhelming amount of people. Thank mew for understanding!

🎃🐈‍⬛ Happy October from Salem Cat Museum! Some notes if you’re visiting soon:
You might know, Salem is BUSY in October! Please be prepared to deal with extra crowds & traffic. That being said Salem Cat Museum is located outside of crazy downtown Salem so there isn’t the normal lines/wait of other attractions. The cat museum is also voluntary admission and never sells out of tickets! Half the admissions fees typically go to area nonprofits (we’ve raised $8762 for various charities so far with $1k last month going to @catdistributioncenter )— but this month we’re doing something a little different and will be using funds on a big internal project we have yet to announce (there’s a hint in the last pic)— we will resume funding nonprofits again after this project wraps up! What’s the project? Stay tuned and you will see!! In the meantime remember that not all the fun in Salem happens downtown! Come visit Boston Street if you want off-the-beaten-path attractions, history and fun! We made you a map— but we highly advise exploring beyond maps always too. Happy October kitties!

Happy Meowloween from Salem! 🐈‍⬛🎃🐈‍⬛🎃🎉 It’s been a crazy season here in the Witch City- much like other years 🤪😹 Salem Cat Museum is open until 3 today and regular hours the rest of the weekend! It’s also the last day to visit the Mini Meowseum in Derby Square 🎃🎉 Thanks to all that helped us survive the month 🙏🏻🙏🏻😻😻 You can see what a mess we made in some of the pics— street vending is chaos 😹😹 Happy Meowloween! 🎃🎃🎉🎉 by @salemcatmuseum

I’m so excited to share my newest art project, A Cat’s-Eye View of Salem, a collection of original watercolor illustrations celebrating Salem’s beautiful historic landmarks — all seen through the eyes of a curious black cat looking out the window!

From the House of the Seven Gables to the Friendship of Salem, each illustration offers a playful new perspective on the city’s rich history. Thrilled to be working with @salemcatmuseum to produce cat themed works. @salemmaritimenps @houseofsevengables @salemwitchmuseum #hocuspocus by @salemcatmuseum

Happy National Black Cat Day!! 🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛🖤🎉🎉 Do you have trouble remembering all the cat days? So do we— so we made a new info graphic listing all of them to help remind us all 😻😻 There are many cat days throughout the year, but black cat days are the most special here in Salem, MA 🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛ After all it was a famous black cat named after the city that was introduced by Archie Comics in 1962 that put Salem back on pop culture’s radar (beating Samantha’s Bewitched episode by 8 years) — there really should be a black cat statue in the center of town, but that’s an issue for another day 😹😹 At Salem Cat Museum we have many art pieces & gift shop items featuring black cats— there are a few in this post 🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛We love black cats so much that they are already decorating the windows of the museum’s future location (coming 2027) 🐈‍⬛🖤🎉 Happy Black Cat Day to All! 🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛🖤🎉🎉

Thank you to @harrisongallaugher over on TikTok for the prominent mention of Salem Cat Museum in their rap about things in Salem, Mass! It’s been a long October and this made us smile 😃😻😻 Thanks to those that sent us this from TikTok as well— we don’t have a museum account on that platform, so appreciate the heads up 🙏🏻🙏🏻😻😻 Also love that Harrison called out Black Cat Diner in town as well— a fellow catty Boston Street business 😻😻 Thank you Harrison for reminding us of many things we like about Salem just as the tourist takeover nears it’s annual peak! We’re almost there, kitties! 🎃🐈‍⬛🎉

We’ve told you many times that the best way to walk to Salem Cat Museum from downtown Salem is via Federal Street, but you might not realize it’s also one of Salem’s most aesthetically pleasing streets! 🎃🍂🍁 In October the residents really go all-out with seasonal decor— this is where you’ll find the famous @purelysalem house and a few others competing for Salem’s unofficial best Halloween house. Federal Street is about .84 miles long and has wide (though sometimes uneven) sidewalks on each side. It is open to one-way car traffic — both the street and sidewalks stay relatively quiet when compared to other places in Salem. Salem Cat Museum is about a five minute walk from the end of Federal Street at 107 Boston Street. This weekend looks nice for a walk to the museum, will you be taking one? 🎃🍂🍁🐱 by @salemcatmuseum

It’s a big weekend for cat events! 😻🎉 Both @catconworldwide and @cpcatconvention are happening in Catifornia and Mew Jersey respectively on Caturday & Sunday! Have you ever been to a cat event before? They are kind of like drinking from a fire hose when it comes to cat culture— they tend to have an overwhelming amount of information and resources for both cats & cat people! The events have been popular in recent times— there might even be one happening near you! Salem Cat Museum’s founder even ran one called @witchcitykitty in 2019, 2022 and 2024 — it’ll be back in 2027 in a slightly different form (more later). We wish we could attend @cpcatconvention and @catconworldwide this year, but alas Salem is a little busy right meow 🎃🤪 In the meantime here’s a list of all the businesses and artists that are attending this weekend’s events that have worked with Salem Cat Museum (sorry if we missed you, turns out there’s a lot 🙏🏻🙀)
