Recently, The Times posted an article written by Kathleen Stock about the rise of young women using mobility aids. The article blamed “social contagion” and popular media for the rise. The article is nothing more than a modernised version of citing hysteria as the cause, where Kathleen has ignored the vast failures of the medical system which has disproportionately affected women.

Just shy of 25 years old, I had to purchase my first mobility aid due to incomprehensible pain and exhaustion. I was unable to stand in one place or walk for any decent distance without, as Kathleen puts it, the onslaught of “vague medical-sounding” symptoms such as postural tachycardia, pain caused by my joint hypermobility and fibromyalgia. All of which, in case she was confused, were symptoms and illnesses diagnosed by my extensive and knowledgeable medical team. Use of the walking stick, and eventually crutches and wheelchairs enabled me to work, socialise and live any sort of life I deemed personally meaningful. I still regard this as one of the hardest and bravest things I have ever done.

What I went through when using mobility aids was consistent remarks from able bodied people about “what happened”, “do you really need that” and invasive questions about my medical history. This is combined with the internalised ableism which plagues every moment of use. I can promise Kathleen that these young women aren’t using these aids by choice, and the ability to “ditch the props” is just not that simple. The shift from being able to hide invisible illness to relying on a device which makes you vulnerable to the world is incredibly exposing. I suggest any social contagion that she is suggestive of, is in fact an online community of advocacy and support that enables comfort to women that the medical system has failed.

I understand that it is easier to believe that women are hysterical or that their “vague medical-sounding” symptoms are caused by psycho-social factors rather than look into the inaccessible world which is designed to exclude the subjects of this ‘article’, or to look into the research which has excluded women for being too complicated. by @saltedstudios_
