HYDRA
Designed by Norman Foster (@officialnormanfoster) with the Norman Foster Foundation (@normanfosterfdn) and crafted by Salviati.
Created for Murano Illumina il Mondo 2026 (@theveniceglassweek), Hydra reinterprets the traditional "Venetian chandelier" through a dialogue between contemporary design, engineering, and the centuries-old craft of Murano glassmaking.

HYDRA is on display beneath the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco, until November 1st.

This weekend in Venice — from Saturday late night into Sunday morning — one week after the opening of HYDRA, designed by Norman Foster with the Norman Foster Foundation and Salviati for Murano Illumina il Mondo 2026.

Suspended beneath the arches of the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco, HYDRA brings together Murano’s centuries-old glassmaking tradition with contemporary design and technology, transforming from a sculptural presence by day into an atmospheric red light installation after dark.

On view in Piazza San Marco as part of Murano Illumina il Mondo 2026, during the tenth edition of The Venice Glass Week.

Join us in Venice this Sunday, 13 September, for the unveiling of the Venetian Chandelier.

Designed by Norman Foster with the Norman Foster Foundation and Salviati, the chandelier brings together Murano’s centuries-old glassmaking tradition with contemporary design and technology.

A process of experimentation, prototyping and craftsmanship has shaped the project from its earliest ideas to its final form, which will be revealed for the first time on Sunday as part of Murano Illumina il Mondo during The Venice Glass Week.

Come and discover the final piece in Venice.

Soft Glass.

We tend to think of glass as something rigid, fragile, and still.

Yet, inside the furnace, it reveals a completely different nature: fluid, malleable, constantly moving.

In Salviati, working with glass means understanding this delicate balance between movement and control, allowing a material that never truly stands still to take its final form.

Inside the furnace.

Some call it chemistry. Others call it magic.

For the artisans at Salviati, it’s the extraordinary work they do every day — transforming fire, breath and molten glass into unique objects, projects and experiences.

"Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic or worldview characterized by finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, or simplicity." Oxford English Dictionary

In Wabi Sabi collection designed by Arch. Kengo Kuma (@kkaa_official ), the visual key to interpret this concept, is Water. The profiles of tumblers, glasses and carafes, seem to retain the movement of a drop, a wave or a rippling surface. Glass makes this parallel especially natural: it begins as solid matter, becomes fluid through fire, then returns to a solid state while preserving the memory of movement. Transparency, light and colour heighten this sensation. In clear and blue glass, the objects evoke water without literally imitating it.

Introducing Wabi Sabi: the new Salviati glassware collection where imperfection is a form of beauty.

Wabi Sabi, designed by Kengo Kuma (@kkaa_official ) for Salviati, allows glass to preserve the traces of gesture and movement. Irregular profiles, soft surfaces and subtle variations make every piece unique.

Five objects for the table, in blue and clear glass, for a collection that celebrates material as it is: alive, ever-changing, one of a kind.

One year ago @expo2025japan came to a close — but one of the stories that began there was only just taking shape.

At the entrance of the Italy Pavilion, dieXe, the chandelier created by architect Kengo Kuma (@kkaa_official ) with Salviati, welcomed visitors from the very first day.

From that first encounter came the Zero Collection: a series of limited-edition works exploring a shared vision of material, light and form, also unveiled during Expo 2025 Osaka.
A year later, the dialogue continues.
After dieXe and the Zero Collection, new expressions of this collaboration are now taking shape — a new chapter we look forward to revealing soon.

HYDRA - Venetian Chandelier
Designed by Norman Foster and The Norman Foster Foundation

Beneath the Procuratie Vecchie, nearby to the historic Olivetti Showroom designed by Carlo Scarpa, HYDRA occupies a position between object, sculpture and architectural installation. It belongs to the history of the Venetian chandelier, while its construction and language belong to the present. The chandelier thus becomes not only a lighting object, but a work suspended between memory and innovation, conceived to engage with one of the city’s symbolic places: Piazza San Marco.

✨ Organic arms branch out into a delicate glass structure, culminating in hand-blown luminous elements that reinterpret the traditional Venetian chandelier through a contemporary design language.

#VenetianChandelier – Hydra by @normanfosterfdn, created with @salviati1859 and master glassmaker @franco_zane_murano_, is a site-specific installation that explores glass as both a structural and expressive material. The meeting between the Foundation’s innovative approach to design and Murano’s centuries-old craftsmanship gives shape to a chandelier where lightness, light, and experimentation look towards the future while remaining rooted in Venetian heritage.

Take a walk under the vaults of the Procuratie Vecchie in St. Mark’s Square to admire this magnificent chandelier.
