This might just be the most ā€œsocialā€ thing Iā€™ve done on ā€œsocial mediaā€ Connected with Jake from @chromemercystudio cause I loved what he was doing in both industry and content space. Sent him some goodies, and he kindly made a lil video Reached out months later about my RX7 seatsā€¦ and he gives me the time of day to walk through the process, advice, encouragement and yarns. We ended up chatting for an hour. I truly believe good people make great work. I know they arenā€™t mutually exclusive but the sentiment is that good, kind people care and put that care into their work. We wanted to make a NOS (new old stock) style vintage tee. Our references were on-the-nose from 80ā€™s automotive, including the Mazda RX-500, Allan Holwellā€™s technical illustrations, and BMW advertising. This is more of a reimagined homage to Holwellā€™s illustration than it is something new entirely. BUT - we knew it would look great on a tee as a DTG (direct to garment) print that fades over time and wash cycles and develops a nice patina. Lately Iā€™ve been thinking more about the opposite of planned obsolescenceā€¦ what about things that get better with age ? Our style is trying to capture that, so that as the garment wears it looks better, feels better and doesnā€™t erode its original value. Brand new white tee shirt + oil stain = bin, however what if the signs of living life add to the aesthetic? Episode 1 of ā€œSteal like an artistā€: Alfredā€™s Apartment This Gold Coast brand has been making waves (pun) with their community, but I noticed an eerie similarity to another clothing brand that I wanted to deep dive into. Spoiler alert: I think itā€™s a brilliant strategic move to leverage two key things in building a community: 1) The design references the iconic Surf Fever typography from surf culture pioneer John Severson, linking into their surfing roots. 2) Their name has deep local resonance, with most people having lived, rented, visited or holidayā€™s in a mid century low-rise apartment called ā€˜Paradise Apartmentsā€™ or similar. If you bought one of these tees youā€™re the REAL OG! Itā€™s full circle. I started in music/skate casual fashion, working at City Beach spruiking their newest supplier, ā€œVansā€ (and why you should get them instead of Osiris high tops), through to making my own verrryy DIY t-shirts aimed at hardcore/post-hardcore music fans. Weā€™re talking Escape the Fate, Bring Me The Horizon and The Devil Wears Prada. Now Iā€™m producing shirts and other goods that are for people invested in a different obsession: cars. I feel like music, skating, cars, tattoosā€¦ itā€™s all very similar fashion ethos. Itā€™s not high street or the Met Gala but there is inherently something cool about it, as to be invested in these hobbies requires risk, style and hard work. Anyway enough musing. Thereā€™s a really cool thread in all this if youā€™re willing to readā€¦ This week I just needed a win. I got two. The sincere words ā€œjust keep goingā€ from my wife made me keep putting in the hard work, and hard work beats luck every day of the week. A reel I posted got the most views/engagement Iā€™ve ever done. Then, I got a message that the ex-global head of creative at @movember was wearing a Duckson shirt at an advertising industry event, from Cam who produced, filmed and edited our Duckson brand film. Theyā€™re small things, but I needed them this week. The cool thread? The reel that performed better than anything else was an encouragement to keep going, in a car context. The message was ā€œone more boltā€ - I.e take restoration one small step at a time. A tonne of comments reflected menā€™s mental health - talking about being overwhelmed, needing clarity, and finding the advice really helpful. That thread between my wifeā€™s comments to ā€˜keep goingā€™, the reel & its response, and Movember (who focus on menā€™s health) was a really powerful connection. šŸ™šŸ» by @duckson.garage

Following up on my reel about this, here are some statics to very quickly walk through the process: - the brief was quick and dirty, make us an ice cream truck brand that can do skids - Mr Skiddy turned to Mr Rippy turned to Mr Zippy - I wanted a melty, soft serve, lo-fi feel to the type - look & feel got locked in, and we rolled out assets Feel free to critique but honestly given the time crunch and amount of capacity to pull it together I was happy it got green lit and played on YouTube (and also a little thing callled national broadcast television) #design #graphicdesign Key Credits: Client: @supercheap_auto Project Manager: @reece.moger Talent: @carlcoxofficial @theskidfactory Wrap: Installed by @battle_wraps taken in Lakeside International Raceway by @duckson.garage
