I had to bring you into the world living in a homeless shelter because I decided you were important enough to give up everything for. Even though I was the only one fighting for you, I loved you long before I met you. I wanted to bring you into this world. I fought every day to get us back on our feet after you were born. Every day now I fight for you, I’ll never stop fighting for you. You are the reason.

🖤 and 💙 and bad to the bone by @samurai_cat___

I took this photo with my daughter a few years ago. When my grandma passed in July my Dad sent me a lot of photos that I’d never seen. This one stuck with me, carrying the next generation in our arms. Do we inherit the journeys of our ancestors, and hold them within our bodies? It feels like it. I hope to make my journey one my ancestors and daughters’ daughters will be proud of. Wait. No. Scratch that. I don’t hope…I will. by @samurai_cat___

I gotchu baby girl 😘 don’t even worry about it

The sun sinks behind the mountains and I breathe in a lungful of ocean air. It’s a small pub, the owners are sitting outside at a table as we walk by and we exchange big smiles and head bows. Kitkat picks a little snack from inside. Nokonoshima. We’re on a small island off the coast of Fukuoka, a 10 minute walk down the beach from our place is where the ferry picks us up and takes us 10 minutes across the water. It’s a fishing village, with all the little boats snuggled up into the dock. The sashimi I eat tonight is from this bay :) We take the bus up the mountain to the flower gardens, we buy an ice cream from the little store at the top of the island as hawks circle the skies and butterflies flirt behind the lavender. People write their wishes and tie them on the trees. I wander off and find a little shrine overlooking the water on the other side of the island. I whisper some wishes quietly to the sea too. We go to a tiny church on the way down, the prayers I’ve heard so many times, Japanese translations of the mass. We walk back down to the ferry dock and wind our way back down to the water. We see the city my Dad grew up in stretching out below us, he looks across the water and does one of his deep John Shinichi sighs. I think about my Grandma who we visited earlier that day in the hospital in Imajuku. I think about her hands, her hair, and how long the ocean air has kissed them. My Dad says “can you imagine this water filled with warships?” Fukuoka weathered two large scale mongolian invasians in the 13th century, the remains of quickly built stone walls remain along the coastline even to this day. Some moments I feel like my spirit is glitching and going back to other centuries and other lives I’ve lived. I felt this way when I looked out over the mountains in Slovakia. My name is Catharine and Ritsuko, I have my Slovakian Grandma’s name and my Japanese Grandma’s name. Do we inherit the journeys of our ancestors, and hold them within our bodies? It feels like it. My whispered wish to the sea is that I can make them proud of me, and my butterfly daughter. She flaps her little wings and shimmers beautifully on this Island. by @samurai_cat___
