Color study that I got carried away with. Spent a couple of hours with a model, then conceptualized for a few more hours with older paintings as reference. by @sand.paints

Still life of cupcakes and chocolate 🍫🍫🍫 Oil on linen, 16" x 18." The set up smelled sooo delicious! by @sand.paints

Recent single-session oil sketch from today, as well as a photo of my cat idling around in my studio ☺️✨ I experimented again with semi-diffuse light, which creates super gorgeous lighting effects. And of course, finding lots of shape design opportunities within a neutral portrait is lots of fun too.

Happy November everyone! I hope everyone settles in and cozies up to their favorite warm drink this time of year~ 🍂☕️ by @sand.paints

Portrait sketch of @paulostran.art ! It was such a pleasure painting you 🥹🌸 Thank you so much for your immense kindness and overall support.

Hopefully I can sketch all of my friends more! I'm happy to get back into painting lots of sketch portraits consistently again. by @sand.paints

Recent portrait sketch of @ryanne_draws in natural, diffuse daylight. She has gorgeous color notes and structures, which I'll definitely capture in the next sketch.

Swipe to see the final (not upside down!) sketch. by @sand.paints

Here's a super quick 5"x7" sketch of @ryanne_draws ! We're usually out and about exploring new coffee shops together all over Southern California. Here, we tried an earl grey-infused milk latte which was divine 😭

This baby sketch feels so much more like a "me" piece, given that it has coffee, close friends and a warm and cozy ambience. I'll move on to a slightly bigger version of this soon ☺️🖤 by @sand.paints

Detail shots of champagne grapes with a brown egg. I have a lot of fond memories while painting this: I was painting this in my old resident studio at @grandcentralatelier , and enjoying a lot of the more diffuse natural light. And of course, I remember pushing to finish this, as the grapes were quickly drying and wilting. It took a few days in total from start to finish to complete this. Because of this, you’ll see various quick brushstrokes and textures, so as to encapsulate all of the natural movement.

Champagne grapes are my absolute favorite, so this is an homage to this special fruit! 🍇✨

I finally got this portrait of Zara professionally photographed✨ Swipe to see all of the detail shots. I’m still finishing up my quadruple primed linen, which is very slippery (as you can all imagine). However, at the same time, it’s easier to build up texture and noise, as well as emphasize her more rounded out forms ☺️ There’s definitely a technique to using slick surfaces well!

It's difficult to paint your fellow artist friends at times, yet feels incredible when you successfully capture them. This is a small sketch of the gorgeous @torilily.art 🌸✨️

Despite this being a shorter sketch session, I still make it a point to review paintings with specific effects that I enjoy, and do my best to (subtly) integrate them into my own work. Swipe to see detail shots and three artworks I referred to while making this. by @sand.paints

Some of my best paintings seem to be the ones where I let loose and simply enjoy the process. It seems that the less I think and worry, the better the results turn out.

One of my favorite sketches of Ben to-date. The three hours passed relatively quickly! I reserved the final hour for the tattoo details. Swipe for step-by-step painting shots.

Thank you to @seasidetattooshow for letting me paint at your event, and thank you to @_builttochill l for taking the first, eighth and last photo in this post. Thank you to @trekell_art_supplies as well for making me aware of this event. I appreciate it all! by @sand.paints
