Celebrating a powerhouse of a woman: Sandy Hill.

This evening, surrounded by my favorite island gatos, was a good reminder to take things less serious and allow myself to be playful with the range of my collection.

I played 2 sets and honestly a joy to experience creativity flow through me with minimal tension.

Who wants the recordings?

Shoutout to @fly.on.little.wing @mosslington @veracolombo and Thomas for making this happen & @rubenmefisto + @alvaro.s.photo for your lens. @sandyhill we love you.

With my Dad who turns 99 in two months: he’s almost completely recovered from the hip replacement he had six months ago. His fine posture has been restored, and he’s only lost 1” in height since age 39 (6’2). We are planning a hike together in the Santa Cruz mountains next summer. What an inspiration. taken in Los Gatos, California by @undersmusic

In the heart of Chamula, Chiapas, I found myself in a church unlike any other I have seen. But taking photos is punished by a day of public shaming in the town jail, so words will have to capture the essence of this place.

Bathed in the dim glow from small dirty windows, the interior sparkles with candlelight—flames in votive glasses and tapers bleeding wax onto the floor. The atmosphere is dense, charged with the primal scents of sweet copal incense and acrid human skin: raw humanity gathered in the dark. Without pews, the congregation sits on the floor which has been covered in fresh pine needles, families huddled together in intimate ceremonies.

My focus was drawn to a curandera, chanting in her native Tzotzil, cradling a moaning chicken apparently aware of its impending doom. The serenity in her act of taking life, the bird’s body quivering on the floor in the aftermath, laid bare the profound animist beliefs pulsating through this place.

In another corner, an old woman with long hair braids rubbed the body of a young girl with a bag of whole eggs, a practice believed to extract darkness and malaise from within.

Elsewhere, people sang, wailed, chanted, prayed and washed each other’s feet in buckets of water infused with herbs, not as a celebration but as a solemn rite of renewal, echoing Mayan deep spiritual roots.

Standing in this church, where light and dark so plainly co-exist , I was immersed in the stark reality of this syncretic Catholic/Mayan faith that embraces life, death, and the continuum in between, a spirit manifest in rituals that touch the very core of existence. taken in Iglesia de San Juan Chamula by @undersmusic

Inside the Arco del Tiempo, rising 600 feet above the La Venta river bed, it is the largest stone arch in the world. Discovered in 1989, deep in the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas, Mexico, reaching this hidden wonder of the world takes a few hours on foot bushwhacking the jungle on a steep muddy trail and then a rappel down a limestone cliff, landing in waist deep turquoise water at the base. There is something especially awe inspiring to find remote and newly discovered places in this well travelled world. Fewer than 2000 people have ever been here before. I am fortunate to be one of them. taken in Arco del tiempo, Cintalapa Chiapas by @undersmusic

Mexico City is on fire — even Popocatépetl is showing up, spewing his energy into the clear skies of a warm winter afternoon. Best city in the world right now, IMHO. #zonamaco2024 taken in Roma (Mexico City) by @undersmusic

“It’s turtles all the way down.” On the day after Christmas I attended the Turtle Dance ceremony at the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, in New Mexico. Modern lenses are forbidden, hence this image from a vintage postcard, but this ritual endures. In the unseasonable warmth of a December afternoon, the rhythmic chanting of more than 100 men in full dress drew me into a trance. Limbs and hips adorned with rhythmic noisemakers, the past and the present merged, remembering ancient truths, spiraling into infinitude. taken in Ohkay Owingeh, N.M. by @undersmusic
