This repeating pattern is one you’ll see quite often in antique Persian rugs. It’s called “Mahi” in Farsi which translates to fish in English.

“Tavana” - circa 1920s - available on my website

Green dye: One of the most abundant colors found in nature, yet the hardest to create with natural dyes. Persian artisans were quite skilled at creating floral rugs without actually using green, in fact, you don’t even realize it until you start looking closer.

So when green appears in an antique rug, it’s worth a second look: it was one of the most labor-intensive colors a dyer could make.

Part 2 will explain how the dyers achieved “green” 💚

Featured rug: “Cyra” 1930s Heriz - available on my site

Sapere’s Rugs are back!! I’ve missed you my instagram rug aficionados. 🥹 ♥️ You may not know this about me, but I’m a bit of a serial entrepreneur. Making something new is thrilling to me, overcoming challenges and creating organizations that haven’t yet existed is just … in my bloodstream.

This rug account has always been for ME. It’s my escape from the real world, my introvert paradise, a place where I get to focus on hand made works of art and feed my soul ♥️

Here’s what I’ve been up to:
- I was on the launch team for a K-12 nature based school, fully accredited and accepting state funding here in AL. It was a wild, and extremely busy adventure. However, my 3 kiddos are THRIVING and that’s the most important thing in the whole wide world. @wonderstead.school

- I am the co-founder of a clinic for pregnant women in AL! @hg_morningsicknessclinic I focus on ensuring access to care is equitable for all women. We’re kicking off multiple clinical trials this year and looking at expanding. We’re in our 4th year. ✨

- I run our non-profit arm that provides wrap around support for women struggling with their pregnancies. I write grants, strategize with funders, and create case management pipelines

- oh and I have 3 kids, 3 cats, one husband, and am entering the confusing ride of perimenopause 😵‍💫

I’ve missed you!! Let me know how you’ve been! How are all your antique rugs doing?! Send me updated photos!

A Bahtiary with birds in the border. One of my first antique rug loves! This is an Antique Bahktiari with a beautiful low pile, fine knotting. In wonderful condition with a few areas of wear (see closeups & videos on my website).

I did an instagram story series all about this Bahktiari and the allure behind the artistry of it's beautiful irregular borders. You'll have to go to my instagram and click on the highlight titled "Old Bahktiari" to watch. You'll have to scroll back a bit!

This might be the best summer yet with these kiddos. I am LOVING the bigg(er) kid stage. My oldest is 13, youngest is nearly 7. I’m definitely not getting nearly as much work done when they’re home, but we’re having loads of fun!
