... Let me remind you: these are not real trees. They have learned to make other tree machines, and they have completely surrounded my ranch style home. It is now a log cabin. Sometimes they call me on the phone and whisper things. Give us the man suit, Carlos. Just give us the man suit...'

I’m thrilled to share that my degree show will be exhibited as part of the RDS Visual Art Awards 2026

What Do We Consider a Forest? Questions our definition of forests through commercially planted Sitka spruce forests in Ireland.

Currently, Sitka spruce (native to the northwestern US) covers approximately 361,000 hectares in Ireland, accounting for around 45% of the country’s total forest area, according to the 2022 National Forest Inventory.

My project examines how wilderness functions as the modern world's unconscious. Where the fantasy of untouched nature lets us imagine ourselves separate from the natural world. The industrially planted forest upsets this fantasy: its ordered rows and lack of biodiversity reveal the human design beneath nature’s appearance

Huge thanks to @burrencollegeofart for making it all possible, as well as my MFA classmates @karenstpierre.studio and @oakeyepress for being the inspiration this past year and bringing (Un)earthed: through air, tied to each other to life, and to my lecturers @ehutton, @rubywallis_com, @conor_mcgrady, and @ainephilips for their support throughout my MFA.

Also thanks to Tom Burke and @a.s._dutton for their invaluable assistance with this installation

Sarah Vandemeer’s Hedge Maze Series of paintings is part of the Psychogeography exhibition currently running @lanewaygalleryireland.

The Hedge Maze is a series of process-based paintings, accumulating research into nature and psychogeography and reinterpreting it within the constraints of a single imagined landscape —a hedge maze. Drawing on her experience of nighttime walks through the rural landscapes of County Clare, she explores the maze-like liminality of the hedgerow, mapping the psychology of place and the evolving relationship between humans and their environment. The work considers dream logic, the layers of deep time, and hauntology embedded within the landscape.

Sarah VanDermeer, is a multimedia artist based in Ireland. She specializes in painting, sculpture, performance, and poetry, exploring the intersections of mythology, memory, and the environment. Her practice is influenced by science fiction, fantasy, and surrealism. It is deeply informed by an interest in how human presence and environmental forces interact, shaping both physical and imagined spaces. She has a BFA in Sculpture from the Pratt Institute in New York and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Art and Ecology at Burren College of Art.

PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY is a new exhibition opening @lanewaygalleryireland on Thursday 27 August between 6 and 8 pm. You are all very welcome to join us.

The exhibition features the work of Sarah Vandemeer, Michaela McCann and James Wellwood.

Psychogeography explores how places and spaces shape our mood and our behavior as we experience them. The term was first coined by the Marxist theorist Guy Debord in 1955, a founding member of the Situationist movement who were a group of revolutionary minded artists that aimed to make radical culture a direct part of daily life. They were a strong influence on the British punk movement of the 1970s.

Debord, and others influenced by him, have largely been concerned with large urban environments. As Ireland is very much a rural country with deep links to its ancient past we thought it might be interesting for this exhibition to turn our attention to how rural environments, which are both natural and man-made, might influence our mental state.

This is the first painting I completed as part of an ongoing body of work titled "Sitka Project." More info can be found on my website - link in bio

Little info: Sitka spruce was introduced in Ireland during the early nineteenth century for industrial planting. It now accounts for around half of Ireland's tree cover. Being in the forests, with their dense uniform rows and dark understories, make me feel as though a strange authority lurks beneath. They truly complicate the line between natural and constructed by @sarah.vandermeer
