One person’s forgotten book is another artist’s treasure, and this conversation with Sarah Z Short demonstrates it beautifully. This week, we’re revisiting a favourite Friday Feature Artist episode, where you’ll meet Sarah, a collage artist and printmaker working from her studio in the woods of Rhode Island. You’ll see how she prints with vintage wooden type on rescued book pages, then slices and layers them into bold, abstract collages where shape matters more than words. You’ll discover why Sarah always starts with the grid, how she uses the spaces in between, and how one collage sliding off its panel turned into a whole series inspired by Japanese boro textiles. If you’ve ever looked at a stack of old paper and felt it had another story to tell, this one’s for you. #RARTGalerie #FormesHabitées #ArtContemporain #ExpositionArt #GalerieArt by @sarah_z_short

Many people start collecting stamps, especially as kids, only to move on to other hobbies and leave their albums half-filled. Some of those albums have ended up in my studio. The paper is a treat, layered with lines and images, stamps and hinges, all ready for paint and abstraction.⁣ ⁣ If you were one of those philatelists, this collage might be for you.⁣ ⁣ This abstract collage of stamp album pages and book pages (many with letterpress details) is available on my website.⁣ ⁣ © 2026, Sarah Z Short, There is Need of More, 20" x 16", paper and acrylic paint by @sarah_z_short

Her last story was always her favorite. Her last piece was the best she’d ever composed. That’s why she kept creating more.⁣ ⁣ An abstract collage of vintage papers, with letterpress printing. Her name was Madonna, but she asked all her friends to call her Mad. Not Maddie, or Donna- always Mad. She made it very clear that she’d have words with anyone who said things like, “Are you mad, Mad?” Or any other similar, inane play on her name. Her name was already a challenge without juvenile humor complicating it.⁣ ⁣ Available on my website⁣ ⁣ (C) 2026, Sarah Z Short, Not at all, Madonna, 16x20⁣ ⁣ An abstract collage composed of vintage papers with abstracted shapes from letterpress prints by @sarah_z_short
Inspiration, colors, materials- it begins outside the studio, long before I start putting the composition together. My camera roll is filled with captured moments that, only later, do I realize have come together into a collage.⁣ ⁣ Coming soon to my website, with early access for newsletter subscribers.⁣ ⁣ (c) Sarah Z Short, 2026, Wild Animals I Have Known, 12" x 16", Found paper and fabric and acrylic paint and ink by @sarah_z_short
This series began with ephemera from a Maine bank; from there, I knew I had to use ocean blues with lots of textured paint, bringing beauty to an everyday object. ⁣ ⁣ A gallery wall of small works is one of my favorite ways to showcase my art and collections. ⁣ ⁣ Available on my website.⁣ ⁣ © Sarah Z Short, 2026, Mrs. Brown, Portland, and Down Payment, 12" x 9", vintage paper and acrylic paint by @sarah_z_short
Pencil lines across a panel divided the space and controlled it. Then I asked myself: how can I make this grid weirder? Unexpected colors, marks, and shapes appear.⁣ ⁣ Inquiries @canditaclaytongallery⁣ ⁣ ⁣ © Sarah Z Short, 2026, Follow the Notes, paper, acrylic paint, dry transfer lettering, 48 x 36 x 1.5 in by @sarah_z_short
#RART #SarahZShort #CollageContemporain #ArtContemporain #coulisses by @sarah_z_short
