Our “Fundamentals Framework” helps flutists understand how to practice for more confidence and ease in their playing.

I wanted to see my air direction change as I went up to a super high D. This is the Pneumo Pro, a little device with fans that move depending on where your air is going. I played a low, middle, high, and super high D, fully expecting the fans to light up as I climbed.

They did not. The bottom fan did almost everything, and I could barely coax the second one. My lips changed, my jaw changed, my whole face felt like it was rearranging itself, and my air just kept doing the same thing.

So why do you think the experiment failed? Is the device not sensitive enough, am I accidentally steering it, or is the airstream direction less involved than we’ve all been told? And if the air isn’t changing, what is??

I’m curious to know your thoughts….

You already practice. That's not the problem.
You've done the longtones. You've done the scales.
You put in the hours, and you're still stuck.
Your tone plateaus. Your fingers hit a ceiling.
The problem isn't how much you practice.
It's your approach to practice.

True or false? Artistry can be learned.

True, and it starts with how you practice,
not how much you practice.

If your vibrato never settles,
phrasing feels like guesswork,
and tone colours seem out of reach,
it’s not the hours. It’s the approach.

Artistry isn’t magic. It’s a set of skills, and every one of them is built on tone and technique.

This is me in high school band. (Note the INCREDIBLE posture…)
What I’d tell her:
“You are not your flute playing.”
Music isn’t about proving anything to anybody. It’s connection. Transcendence. Joy, pain, everything in between.
She was allowed to just play. So am I. So are you.

Lizeth asks: How do you avoid cracking notes, especially in the high register, such as E natural, F, F#?

Usually the main problem is air speed!

We'll be exploring this and much much more in our next FREE live webinar: how to build your sound, technique, AND artistry through a more effective approach to practice, without adding more hours to your routine.

A Fundamentally Flute community member asked:

“When playing in the orchestra, I am interested to know how you angle your chair and stand so you can see the conductor and also what height you have your stand at.”

I realized I don't think I've ever given my own setup much thought!

My stand is directly in front of me, around eye level, and I look to the left to see the conductor. I do angle my chair slightly to the right, though, to accommodate my right arm being forward of my body while keeping my shoulders square.

But is there actually an ideal setup? Or does it depend on your height, your section placement, your instrument, and how you move when you play?

What have you found works best for you? Is there a setup you think every orchestral flutist should try? by @sarahahnscinocco

You've heard it before: play long tones, do your scales, put in the hours. But what if the problem isn't how much you practice - it's your actual approach to practice?

In this free webinar, we'll show you how to transform your sound and technique without adding a single minute to your daily routine.

Whether you're a returning player shaking off rust, a teacher looking for language that actually lands with students, or a student chasing a cleaner sound, you'll leave with concrete changes you can hear immediately.

Musical artistry is something you can actually practice.
Phrasing, dynamics, tone colour, vibrato, rubato... these are all skills you can develop with intention, rather than simply hoping your musical instincts will take over.
The key is knowing WHAT to practice and HOW to approach it.
That's exactly what we'll be exploring in our next FREE live webinar: how to build your sound, technique, AND artistry through a more effective approach to practice, without adding more hours to your routine.
