The power of taking a break🌱

I don’t know about you, but I love a routine. I love having a goal to work towards and a vision of what’s possible.

Every fall, I take a break from structured swim training. Usually it’s a month. This year, it turned into two🍂

Two months out of the water. No training schedule. No following black lines or counting meters.

Instead, there were long walks with my dog, meditation, yoga, a little strength training, reading, and space to go with the flow🌊

Was it easy? Not always. I love my structure. I love training. I love being in the water.

But something beautiful happens when we create space. New perspectives emerge. Ideas take shape. We begin to see things we might have missed while constantly moving forward.

And that’s exactly what happened.

As I look towards 2027 and turning 50, I have a vision. One that involves water. A lot of water! 🌊🧜‍♀️ I’m still exploring what that will look like, while making sure my body, mind, and heart are ready for what’s ahead.

But here’s what I really want to share.

If you’ve had a big year of training, celebrate what your body has allowed you to do. Be proud of the distances you’ve covered, the challenges you’ve faced, and the person you’ve become along the way🤎

And then, give yourself permission to rest🪶

Take the nap. Go for the walk. Try something different. Step away from the structure for a little while.

Because rest isn’t the opposite of progress. Sometimes it’s what allows us to see what’s next.

So give yourself that grace to pause, to rest, and to do something different. You never know what might come from it or how it might shape what’s next.

And no matter your age, don’t stop dreaming about what’s possible for you. You might just surprise yourself🤎

I’d love to know, when was the last time you gave yourself permission to take a break? by @sarahfreemancoaching

🌊 Meet the 2027 Swim It Forward Dreamer — Miu! @miu.tanaka.swimmer

Every year, Swim It Forward brings me into the story of a remarkable young woman who has navigated, or is navigating, adversity and carries swim dreams that deserve to be believed in and supported.

Miu Tanaka is a 21-year-old ultramarathon swimmer based in Sydney, Australia. Her dream is to swim in some of the world’s most beautiful waters, push her limits through ultramarathon swimming, and complete both the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the Oceans Seven🌊

Growing up, swimming was often about pressure, comparison, and chasing faster times, sometimes at the expense of her health and happiness. Today, swimming means something entirely different. It’s about loving the water, pursuing her dreams, and discovering just how far she can go.

In 2027, Miu hopes to complete the Triple Crown, which includes the English Channel, Catalina Channel, and Manhattan’s 20 Bridges Swim. She also has her sights set on the Oceans Seven, with New Zealand’s Cook Strait next on her list.

Along the way, Miu dreams of exploring some of Tasmania’s most remote and beautiful waters, beginning with the Gordon River in March 2027.

This is why Swim It Forward exists. To stand alongside young women near and far, honour the journeys that have shaped them and support them as they bring their dreams to life.

I believe Miu’s story carries a powerful message for young women and girls navigating sport, body image and their own sense of possibility✨

Miu, we are honoured to be a small part of your journey, and can’t wait for this community to get to know you🌊

The Return | Women’s Swim Experience 🌊

Maybe you’ve taken a pause from swimming. Maybe you haven’t.

Maybe you were a competitive swimmer years ago, you’re training for your first triathlon or your hundredth, or dreaming of an open water endurance swim. Or maybe you’re looking for a space to breathe, reconnect with the water, and be surrounded by women who are showing up for themselves, each for their own reasons.

What if one swim could create the first ripple of the bigger wave?🌊

I’ve been thinking about two words someone recently shared: “Going first.”

Maybe there’s a dream you’ve been carrying, something you’ve wanted to build, a change you’ve been considering, or something you’ve always wanted to try. Maybe it feels a little or a lot scary, but something inside you keeps saying, “It’s time.”

What would it feel like to go first?

And what if the water could be one of the places where you begin?

Over the past couple years, the Women’s Swim Experiences have continued to grow and evolve. This year, I’m building more opportunities for women to gather throughout the seasons. Each experience will look a little different, but the heart remains the same: connection, confidence, community, and belonging.

The Return, November 22, is the first of these upcoming experiences.

Swim coaching, space to breathe, and a community of women coming together without judgment or expectations.

We all come to the water for different reasons, and there’s something beautiful about choosing to be there together.

Maybe this is your first little ripple🌊

I’d love to share the water with you!

At 49, I’m understanding time differently.

Not as something to fill.
Not as something to race against.
But as something to be inside of.

This photo with my dad is one of those moments.

Horses around us. Trees overhead. Feet on the earth.

And almost no words.

What I remember most is the feeling.

There was something moving between us that didn’t need language. A quiet exchange. An energy. A knowing.

Just being there together was enough.

I didn’t know whether my dad would ever make the journey back here again, and something in me knew we needed this time.

So I listened.

I think that’s one of the gifts of getting older. I’m learning to trust what I feel more, the quiet nudges, yes, but also the things that keep getting louder. The things that won’t leave me alone.

Because some of the most important things in life aren’t spoken.

They’re felt🤎

And I’m beginning to understand that purpose can be like that too.

Water Woman has been teaching me that my work isn’t only about swimming or water. It’s about connection. Belonging. Voice. Creating something that reaches beyond me.

I’ve always carried that somewhere in my roots. But at this point in my life, I’m becoming less afraid of what that gift might actually ask of me🪶

I want to be curious about it.
To follow it.
To let it become bigger.
To use my voice when something matters.
To give back.
To help create access, safety, joy and connection through water.

And to stop dismissing the things that keep rising in me just because I don’t yet know where they’re leading.

The older I get, the less interested I am in rushing through my life.

I want to be here for it.

For the people I love🤎
For the moments I’ll never get back.
And for the purpose that keeps asking me to pay attention.

If something inside you has been whispering do it, or maybe it hasn’t been whispering at all. Maybe it’s been getting louder and louder.

Listen.

It’s time. by @sarahfreemancoaching

These are the moments I want to remember, fully present, fully alive, sharing them with my dad🤎🍂🌊 by @sarahfreemancoaching

What if water reflected back the beauty you’ve forgotten to see in yourself?🤎🌊🧜‍♀️ by @sarahfreemancoaching

Gratitude is woven into so many parts of my life, personally, through Sarah Freeman Coaching, and in the small actions that can create a ripple far beyond ourselves.

I’m grateful to be part of the Bow Valley Gratitude Project for Change Committee, a collective of people exploring how gratitude can shape the way we gather, listen, share our stories, honour this place and care for one another.

On World Gratitude Day, September 21, we’re gathering at Cascade Ponds from 9:15–11:15 a.m. for a quiet morning outside to pause, reflect and connect.

Lorraine’s wisdom around gratitude has influenced this work, and we are grateful for what she continues to bring into this space, alongside the care, ideas and energy of the committee.

In a world that rushes forward, this is a space to pause, pay attention and reflect outside.

Bring a journal, a cup of tea, a memory, or something to share, and of course yourself!

I’ll be there, Lorraine and others from the committee. We would love to see you there🤎
