Drawn 4 years ago after surviving an arterial bleed in my throat following an emergency tonsillectomy. I remember waking up in the ICU from both surgeries, the second more dire than the first, to uncertain results from the polls and listening the pages on the hospital intercom, the alerts from sounds of vitals crashing, as Covid-19 patients on ventilators in closed rooms lost their battles to breathe—a battle I had barely won. I remember how helpless I felt, and not just from having endured revision surgery after losing 3 bags of blood and requiring transfusion. I watched, unable to speak, a reality play out that so many around me had and were denying. And the only thing I could do in my body was lie there, watching, and heal.

“This is your most important work,” my partner @jeremyrathbone said to me, referring to my resting & healing. My anger boiled in my brain and spun my soul into madness. Despite being able to finally breathe, my despair weighed heavily on my chest.

Throughout my life, I’d known what it was like to feel trapped in my home, my relationships, and even my body. I’d known the art of speaking in code in order to stay safe, to be me, to tell the truth. Even during my divorce, I recognized the pattern, that sometimes when people hurt you, it is not due to a misunderstanding or an oversight on their part that needs rectified. Sometimes when you explain to someone who hurt you the gravity of their actions, they are instead validated with their intentions confirmed as successful. Sometimes we are then also hated by our communities for rattling the bars of status quo. I’ve experienced this time and time again. This is why long ago, I chose that rather than speaking directly to those who did me and others like me harm or about my healing growth, I would instead put my truth into my art. “You can’t argue with art,” I said to myself. “If I can’t simply tell them the truth, I will Trojan Horse it into the public consciousness, one drawing, essay, and archetype at a time.” by @sarahrenekraft

🌔 This was my first year with the wonderful folks of the @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo and I’m so excited for the next!🖤🖤 Here’s where you’ll find me on the O&C circuit in 2026!

(And don’t forget to visit me at the 2025 Sacramento show next weekend!)

🪾🍂 It’s officially the dark season, and I’ve got just two big shows for the month before my winter hibernation. Catch me this weekend in the PNW at @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo in #Portland OR. And again next weekend in #Sacramento CA.

🖼️ Word to the wise—I’m hosting a combined booth and gallery experience at the Sac show at CalExpo, where I will be offering my long-kept and previously unavailable original “ribbon pieces” for adoption and priced to sell. (Gotta make room for my solo art show at Flower Fist next year!) If there are any you’ve had your eye on, now’s the time! I don’t offer this often. Hit me up and get a 🎟️ to come visit me at the show!🖤🎀

🤭🤫 #softlaunching …the new SH0P!

Haha, for reals tho. I’ve been talking for years about getting one going, and there’s really no time like the present. So what does a chronically ill little guy with a day job and a full show schedule do? What they can. They do what they can.

That means I’m uploading listings my new and old works, including prints of your favorite pieces, as I go and am able! Gold foil Lemniscus Tarot prints are up first, with so much more to follow in the coming days. It’s a new adventure and I know I’m excited, at least. So, uh, go throw a ♥️ on that thang and follow along.

🕯️🗝️ I’m very proud and excited to announce I’ll be back again in 2027 for another thrilling year with the @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo 💀🖤

And can we give a round of applause to artist @woodytrojak for another stellar set of poster illustrations this year? I may be biased, but I’m literally obsessed with those red ribbons! For those who don’t know, Woody Trojack hand-draws and digitally inks all of the artwork behind the O&C. In fact, O&C is one of the few shows I’ve been happy to be a part of who not only has a ban on AI art and offerings, but means business on it, curating a juried selection of premium artists, artisans, makers, and merchants.

Knowing many of these artists personally, I hear far too often the public confusion AI has created when it comes to human skill vs automated aggregation farmed from those skills. So please, don’t mistake hand-touched excellence for computerized mediocrity. Because never before have I seen so much talent in one place as on these show floors!

With that said, hi!🖤 My name is Sarah René, and I’m a fantasy-surrealist illustrator and storyteller from Northern California. All of my traditionally created and intricate work, hand-drawn with red/blue double-ended @prismacolor pencils is inspired by tarot, Greek mythology, fairytales, alchemy, floriography, and my personal journeys living with chronic illness, dynamic disability, and unmasking. Hope to meet you or see you again at an expo soon! 🎀✍️

✨Feeling something like this with a bad head cold, but getting a ton of work done with @o_x.v_o photographing prints for my imminent shop open. Been keeping it close to my chest, but I should start rolling out offerings by Halloween 🎃🍂🍁

🌕 Thank you #seattle! And thank you to all who came out to visit the booth at the @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo! I had such a blast meeting all of you and wandering the local offerings. As one of my favorite and longest travelled cities (thanks to going in 15 years history with ECCC—see you there again in 2027), you never disappoint!

(And a special thank you to my dear friend and Seattle-based assistant, Bethany @queenbeesinmybrain for overcoming my stray cat energy to adopt me and for helping at the booth 🖤 )

You’ll see me again in the PNW in just 2 WEEKS, at the ✨Portland @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo 11/7-11/8 as well as back in my home state at the ✨Sacramento @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo 11/14-11/15, where I’ll be offering a gallery of all of my old and often requested originals 🕯️
