Our board member @saraisisis handed out End Betta Cup flyers outside of Petco’s flagship store in NYC Union Square.

End Betta Cups week is October 18-24. Please help spread the word in your community.

Download and share the End Betta Cups flyer (5th link in linktree) and help call on @petco, @petsmart, @petsuppliesplus, and @petsupermarket to publish a plan by March 2027 for how they will end betta cup displays across their stores.

Flyer and more ways to take action are also available on endbettacups.org

Update; I took the initiative in drafting a bill and found support within the city council. Intro to Bill 963 to Ban Fish as Prizes in NYC is just one small step towards addressing the importance of fish welfare policy. If you would like to be a sponsor or advocate please reach out and follow @bettaworldforbettas for updates. If you are interested in introducing a bill in your local district please feel to reach out to me or @bettaworldforbettas and we can help you.

In my health committee oversight hearing testimony, I stressed the urgent need to address the welfare concerns of aquatic animals, particularly in light of the New York City feral cat crisis. According to the NYS DEC - Division of Fish and Wildlife, turtles, goldfish, and betta fish are the most trafficked animals in NYC, frequently subjected to inhumane conditions during smuggling and sold to unlicensed vendors or aquarium stores lacking legal safeguards. I emphasized the scarcity of resources, including a limited number of fish veterinarians in NYC, and the necessity for affordable veterinary care and animal shelters. Additionally, I advocated for prohibiting fish giveaways at carnivals and festivals, which contribute to animal suffering and neglect. I urged support for organizations dedicated to promoting fish welfare, including @bettaworldforbettas and @fish.feel to combat inhumane practices.

Goldfish should never be Giveaways.
fish are like any other pet and should never be taken on as an impulse, such as winning them from a fairground.

The lack of concern with which goldfish are given awaywhile the lives of other farmed animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, chicken and turkeys have improved somewhat in recent years as the cruelty of factory farming comes under scrutiny from regulators and consumers, fish husbandry has been let off the hook. More fishes are killed for food than any other animal — 100 billion aquatic animals are farmed annually — and they are also the most commonly kept pet. But there are few laws to protect them. -“fishfeel

Nyao update 😸 he is a happy, strong boy. Today is #worldlymphomaawarenessday Nyao was diagnosed with gastric large cell #lymphoma 7 months ago. He is in remission. It is the most aggressive, ugliest cancer, but today we are alive and well. #lymphomaawareness #chemowarrior #catcancer by @saraisisis

You will not believe this is the same fish. Neville was given Vit C Supplementation in his ER tank. No medications, no salts, just an environment that he is able to thrive in.

#endbettacups for Neville! by @saraisisis

@petco enough is enough. Neville would have died in your cup if I didn’t liberate him. You’re a multi-billion dollar company devoted to “animal care” yet here we are. Any temporary exhibit that puts an animals life in danger is abuse.

Neville deserved better. All animals deserve better! #endbettacups follow @bettaworldforbettas campaign to confront major pet stores to stop this abuse! by @saraisisis

Congratulations my sweet boy! Nyao just graduated chemotherapy. It’s equally terrifying and beautiful.

When you are trying to help your loved one survive a fatal diagnosis, you live in survival mode. Every day before we sleep we give each other kisses and I mean he actually suckles my cheek and leans his head on mine four times every night. It’s the days when he doesn’t when I wake up in panic mode. Is he nauseous, is he in pain, is he relapsing. There is no future plans just constant caretaking and the purest love I have ever felt in my entire life from someone.

Nyao was given 4-6 weeks to live six months ago #chemowarrior#instagood . by @saraisisis

dear @petco I witnessed animals in pain, fear, and near death at your #unionsquare nyc location. This is your largest and most recently renovated stores.Your onsite Veterinary VETCO clinic refused care because he is a fish. This is not your employees fault. This is a systematic problem and it needs addressed now! #endbettacups

Update: thank you for catching me up with his bills and appreciate the community we have been so lucky to find

Friends, I’m in an EMERGENCY situation and need to raise funds today for Nyao’s vet bill. We are here right now.

I hate asking for help, but everyone knows Nyao means the world to me ❤️ and he is doing very well, still cancer-free. His treatment cost today is higher than usual, so I was not prepared.

Support NYC Council Intro 0963-2026

Every year, countless live fish are given away as prizes at carnivals, fairs, and other games of chance. Too often, these animals suffer from improper handling, inadequate care, neglect, and preventable deaths.
@bettaworldforbettas , a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of bettas and other fish, is working with NYC Council Members Vickie Paladino and Frank Morano to support NYC Council Intro 963, legislation that would ban the use of live fish as prizes in New York City. by @saraisisis
