Corporate philanthropy is catalytic – only as long as it is directed towards the right regions and challenges. As CSR hit Rs. 40,794 crore in FY2024-25, we are faced with a daunting question: 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐒𝐑 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝?

Despite the growth in flows to Aspirational Districts and high-need states, nearly 70% of corporate philanthropy goes to urban and industrial districts. Redirecting an additional 5% of FY24–25 CSR funding to high-need districts would triple the funding they receive today.

The first chapter of our new CSR report, ‘𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐒𝐑: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐞', analyses where India has made social progress, where it continues to falter, and where CSR really needs to flow to create long-term impact.

The CSR GPS is suggesting less-travelled routes of impact. Are you ready to explore them?

CSR is beginning to shift toward high-need states, with CSR spend growing at ~35% CAGR, but underlying funding gaps remain significant. Bihar’s Multidimensional Poverty Index is nearly 5 times Maharashtra’s, while the latter receives nearly 19 times more CSR per capita. For CSR to truly be effective, it needs to move closer to addressing critical needs, rather than keep concentrating on regions or issues which already see an upswing in funding.

Learn more through the early insights of our new CSR report, “Catalytic CSR: Where Focused Capital Can Move India’s Developmental Needle.” Stay tuned for the full report!

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, Bihar's Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is nearly 5 times Maharashtra's, yet Maharashtra receives nearly 19 times as much CSR funding per capita.

India’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending reached Rs 40,794 crore in FY 2024-25, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% over the past decade. However, Sattva Consulting and India Data Insights analysis finds that CSR funding remains concentrated in established sectors and better-funded geographies, even as several development indicators show limited progress or deteriorating outcomes.

CSR’s consistent growth over the last decade provides a dependable, catalytic, and strategic source of impact funding. Currently, Education, Health, Livelihoods, Rural Development, and Environment account for up to 80% of CSR. CSR is also reaching high-needs regions faster than before. Aspirational Districts have seen a 200% increase in CSR flow.

However, the question is – is CSR tackling India’s most urgent challenges quickly enough? Geographically, urban and industrial districts alone account for 70% of total CSR. CSR per capita is much higher in lower-need states. And even within themes such as Education and Healthcare, funds are concentrated in a few subsectors.

₹922 crore of GCC CSR went to Delhi NCR between FY23 and FY25, more than any other location, even though Bengaluru hosts more GCCs.

Tier-1 cities remain the centre of GCC CSR, but the footprint is already widening, with 28% of Hybrid GCC investment reaching districts outside Tier 1 to 3. As government policy encourages GCC expansion beyond Tier-1 cities, CSR can play a catalytic role in strengthening talent, innovation and community ecosystems in these new growth corridors.

How are you treating your heart? Are you a toxic boss who loads it with pressure and rarely stops to check how it is coping?

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 60.1% of deaths in India in 2023 came from non-communicable diseases. Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than half of all NCD-related deaths, and the WHO links this shift to population ageing, rapid urbanisation and changing patterns of diet and physical activity.

Because these risks build over years, they also leave years in which to act. Routine screening, strong primary care and workplace wellness programmes can reach people early, and small changes to daily habits add up.

Srikrishna Sridhar Murthy, co-founder and CEO of Sattva Consulting, spent the last two days in Stockholm at H&M Foundation’s Global Change Award 2026, and it was a privilege to be there. The Award backs changemakers who are tackling some of the textile industry’s biggest challenges, a reminder that change starts with people willing to challenge the status quo. He had the opportunity to present a session on collaboration, “Why collaboration breaks: The friction, tensions and human dynamics that get in the way.”

His session drew largely on Sattva’s experience of working with various stakeholders, from 3 to 100+ partners and diverse collective action models, and outlined five fault lines that contribute to stalled partnerships:

1. Teams often make the first wrong move with the right intent. They underestimate the time needed to understand the system at hand. Under pressure to show results, a plan looks like progress and understanding looks like delay.

2. The people who will carry the work, and the people who will live with it, are rarely part of shaping it.

3. Organisations are expected to collaborate without the backbone structure, such as a funded coordination role, that makes it possible.

4. Everyone in the room is committed to collaboration, but their institutions may not be equipped for it. Decisions pass through multiple layers of management, and the collaboration stalls. So check organisational mandate and machinery, not just commitment.

5. Hold yourself to the standard you set for your partners. We ask ten organisations to work as one, so funders should ask whether they share a reporting format or a data platform themselves.

Collaboration doesn’t succeed on intent alone. It takes the right conditions, structures and behaviours to turn a shared ambition into collective impact.

What role can philanthropy play in advancing science and technology in India?

In PRIME Directory 2026, Srikrishna Sridhar Murthy, Co-founder and CEO of Sattva Consulting, and Akshay Modi, Senior Engagement Manager at Sattva Consulting, explore why science and technology deserve a stronger place in philanthropic portfolios.

Read the feature to understand why science and technology must be part of every philanthropist's portfolio: https://www.primedatabase.com/article/2026/Article-Srikrishna_Sridhar_Murthy.pdf

This perspective is grounded in our recent work. On 30 September and 1 October 2026, Sattva convened the first Innovation Yatra in Bengaluru with India's Translational Research Initiative, C-CAMP, IISc, NCBS and ARTPARK. The Yatra brought 35 philanthropists, CSR leaders, investors and ecosystem builders to four institutions that span the journey from lab to market.

More updates from the Innovation Yatra will follow.
