Feels immensely happy and proud to share that key founding members of the Mumbai Bird Watchers Club (MBC), @saurabhsawant , @adeshshivkar, @ameyketkar , @rujutaph , and @mandar.khadilkar have been honoured with the prestigious Mumbai Warrior Award at the SFC Environmental Awards, organized by Mumbai Tarun Bharat.

The award was presented by an esteemed panel of dignitaries and announced by an actor Shri. Virajas Kulkarni.

Delighted to share some wonderful news

Mumbai Birdwatchers Club (MBC) has been honoured with this year’s SFC Environment Awards – Species and Habitat Warriors 2026, under the Mumbai Warriors category.*

Awards are always special, but this one feels particularly meaningful because it reflects the collective efforts of so many people over the years.

For more than two decades, MBC has been much more than a birding group. It has been a place where friendships were formed, knowledge was shared freely, and countless mornings were spent exploring Mumbai’s natural spaces together. From first-time birders to experienced field observers, every person who joined a birdwalk, shared a sighting, asked a question, or helped another birder has contributed to what MBC is today.

This recognition belongs to all of you who have been part of that journey. We are also grateful to the many volunteers and birdwalk leaders whose time, energy, and enthusiasm have helped keep the spirit of MBC alive over the years.

For me personally, it has been a privilege to be associated with MBC from its early days and to witness the community grow into what it is today.

While most people go to Coorg for the coffee and the hills, Mansab Sayyad went for the frogs and ended up falling in love with a species no bigger than his thumb. As someone who began his wildlife journey studying fungi and butterflies, he never expected to be enchanted by herpetofauna. But one rain-soaked night, somewhere between dodging leeches and trudging through forests, he had a moment of quiet connection with the forest, the frogs, and himself.

At the link in our bio, he traces his first encounter with the Coorg yellow bush frog, a delicate, golden, blue-eyed frog found only in the Western Ghats.

A Blue Sheep keeps vigil while the other one rests - there are a no of predators that it has to be aware of -none more agile and wily than the 'gray ghost of the mountain' the 'Shan' - the Snow Leopard! - & the only way to save its skin is to be alert and aware of the surroundings all the time. Both the images are taken from our short tour in February 2025 - exploring the Himalayan landscape in Ladakh and the semi arid forests of Tadoba - and guess what - the guests had in just 12 nights stay managed to see - Snow Leopard, Tiger, Leopard, Eurasian Lynx, Himalayan Wolf, Indian Wild Dog and enjoyed some amazing wilderness moments. Community youth taking part in BaghSankalp’s nature orientation program were thrilled with an unforgettable Tiger sighting on the second day of 2025! 🐅 This incredible moment highlights the program’s mission to connect local kids with nature, inspiring a love for the environment and conservation values.

Changthang is a vast, cold expanse of almost barren, exposed mountains covered in brownish gravel with patches of hardy grass and shrub. It is bound in the southwest by the impossibly steep sandstone cliffs of the Zanskar range, and in the northwest by the massive granite peaks of the Ladakh Range.

Water here traditionally meant the snowmelt from these mountains, which fed rivers and streams, as well as the marshy wetlands that pockmark the plateau. But the last two decades have seen increasing rain and correspondingly less snow in Ladakh. Hotter, longer summers, and faster melting glaciers are among the other symptoms of climate change that ought to be cause for alarm and activism.
