Alegre - it literally means cheerful in Spanish and how can you not be at one of Sydney’s most magical restaurants?

Perched above Darling Harbour, this stunning waterfront restaurant feels worlds away from the city’s hustle. With sweeping marina views, a refined atmosphere and a menu inspired by the vibrant flavours of Mexico, every dish feels like a transportive dining experience.

Thoughtfully blending authentic Mexican techniques with exceptional Australian produce, Alegre delivers bold flavours in the most elegant way.

Some of our favourite menu items:

- Clásico Ceviche
- Campechana Tostada
- Street-Style Chicken Carnita Taco
- Nixtamal Corn Masa-Battered Baja Style Fish Taco

📍Alfie’s
(Shop 2, 4/6 Bligh St, Sydney NSW 2000)

If you’re looking for a great after-work dinner spot, this lineup is one I’d happily order again:

🥩 Sirloin Steak (220g) – Perfectly cooked, juicy and full of rich flavour, served simply with green mustard to let the quality of the steak shine.

🥬 Brussels Sprouts – A standout side with sweet carrot, aromatic fennel and a splash of sherry, adding the perfect balance of freshness and depth. This one’s my favourite!!

🥦 Charred Cauliflower Fioretto – Beautifully caramelised with a creamy yoghurt dressing and vibrant chimichurri, making this far more than your average cauliflower dish.

🥗 Bitter Mixed Leaf Salad – A refreshing mix of endive, radicchio and rocket, finished with a subtly sweet date dressing that cuts through the richness of the meal.

🍟 Hot Chips – Golden, crispy and generously seasoned, served with a nostalgic chip shop curry sauce that’s seriously addictive.

Simple, satisfying and exactly what an after-work dinner should be. Save this one for your next dinner!

🍝🦞 Creamy Lobster Bisque with Squid Ink Spaghetti

Rich and velvety lobster bisque tossed through squid ink spaghetti, finished with succulent grilled prawns, flying fish roe, cherry tomatoes, crispy pangrattato, and fresh herbs grown in-house. Comforting, indulgent, and full of flavour.

🐙🥗 Vitality Grilled Baby Octopus Salad

Perfectly char-grilled baby octopus served with kipfler potatoes, roasted red bell pepper, Brussels sprouts, caper berries, and fresh in-house grown watercress. Fresh, vibrant, and a great balance to the richness of the pasta. Such a unique twist!

We’ll definitely be back!

Levantine Jewel 💎👑

A Mediterranean-inspired salad, bursting with flavour 🥗

Bold, colourful and layered with sweet, smoky, creamy and crunchy elements. Every bite packs a punch! 💥

Serves
4–6 as a main | 6–8 as a side

Ingredients

Base
- 200g hummus, smeared generously across a large serving platter
- 250g baby leaf spinach

The Good Stuff
- 1 medium beetroot, diced
- 2 large sweet potatoes, diced and roasted
- 200g marinated feta cheese, diced
- 100g marinated green olives, halved
- 1 bunch broccolini, chargrilled
- 500g chicken breast, diced and marinated

Extra Good Stuff
- 50g macadamias, crushed and roasted
- 50g almonds, crushed and roasted
- Drizzle of balsamic glaze or fig glaze
- Optional: pomegranate arils

1. Roast the Sweet Potato
Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
Toss diced sweet potatoes, with light olive oil and salt. Roast for 20–25 minutes until golden and caramelised. Set aside to cool slightly.

2. Cook the Chicken
Marinate diced chicken breast in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, cumin (optional), salt and pepper for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for deeper flavour).
Cook in a hot pan or grill until golden and cooked through. Set aside.

3. Char the Broccolini
Lightly coat broccolini with olive oil and grill or pan-char until tender with smoky edges. Season lightly.

Note: I put a bit of extra love in this recipe by marinating the olives and feta from scratch, but the pre-marinated deli/store-bought versions work just fine too!

4. Assemble the Salad
On a large serving platter:
- Generously smear the hummus across the base of the plate.
- Scatter baby spinach over the top.
- Layer beetroot, roasted sweet potato, chicken, broccolini, feta and olives evenly.
- Finish with crushed roasted macadamias and almonds.
- Drizzle with balsamic or fig glaze.
- Sprinkle with pomegranate arils, if desired.

Serving Tip
Serve immediately while the chicken is warm against the cool feta and fresh greens. Pair with warm flatbread or grilled pita, if desired.
