A BIT ABOUT THE IVORY COAST NATIONAL TEAM

The Ivory Coast national team, playing in the last Africa Cup of Nations, lost 4–0 to Equatorial Guinea on home soil and in front of their own fans. After that humiliating defeat, the Ivorian Football Federation decided to sack their French coach Jean-Louis Gasset, as the team had finished third in their group with only 3 points and a negative goal difference, meaning they were effectively out of the tournament.

But then came the shock twist. Other teams like Ghana and Zambia also finished third in their groups, but with only 2 points each. That bizarre scenario allowed Ivory Coast to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, despite having already fired their coach.

With no time to find a replacement, the assistant coach Emerse Faé was appointed as caretaker manager.

And that’s when the miracle began. Faé led the team to an incredible run, defeating Senegal, Mali, Congo, and Nigeria, and won the Africa Cup of Nations for Ivory Coast for the first time since 2015.

But the fairytale didn’t end there. In the World Cup qualifiers, Faé continued his astonishing performance:
• Played 10 matches without a single loss.
• Qualified Ivory Coast for the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
• Became the first Ivorian coach ever to take his country to the World Cup.
• Recorded the second-best attack with 25 goals.
• Didn’t concede a single goal, the first time in history this has happened, alongside Tunisia.
